Abstract
Today, as more and more families have working members, homes are being left unmonitored for several hours each day. There is no provision for emergency alerts, automation mechanisms or monitoring facilities for the home environment conditions. There is immense potential for technological development in this direction especially because of the advancement in the Internet of Things (IoT) [1]. It is possible to monitor home environment conditions using sensors to detect temperature, humidity, light, sound and gas concentrations in the air. It is also possible to monitor customised situations such as water tanks being full, dustbins being overloaded and refrigerators left open. The need of the hour is an integrated solution to be able to monitor the environment conditions from a single mobile application [7]. Some degree of automation to control the home environment conditions along with notifications in case of emergency situations such as gas leaks also needs to be part of this single solution. This case study paper is taken to provide a single integrated solution to the above mentioned problem of being unable to keep homes monitored for several hours in the day. The concept is customized to monitor these conditions and notify the user on his mobile application remotely. Most environment variables can be monitored by opening and refreshing the application. Emergency situations and customized alerts are intimidated to the user by sending push notifications to his mobile device such that he can be made aware of any important conditions immediately. The sensor data is stored on the cloud such that it can be scalable and the data can later be used for analytical purposes as well. The concept worked in this paper is a much-needed solution in today’s world. When most men and women are out of home during the day time, this solution can alert them in case of a gas leak, overloaded water tanks and can also help them save power by remotely switching on and off the electrical device present at home. It is an integrated and customizable solution to cater the varying needs of users. It helps for monitoring the entire house on the user’s mobile device from any part of the world. © IAEME Publication.
