AbstractAddress Resolution Protocol (ARP) cache poisoning results in numerous attacks. A novel mitigation system for ARP cache poisoning presented here avoids ARP cache poisoning attacks by introducing timestamps and counters in the ARP messages and ARP data tables. The system is evaluated based on criteria specified by the researchers and abnormal packets.

Network utilization reached its maximum level due to the availability of high-end technologies in the least cost. This enabled the network users to share the sensitive information like account details, patient records, genomics details for biomedical research and defence details leading to cyber-war. Data are vulnerable at any level of communication. The link-layer Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is initiated for any data communication to take place among the hosts in a LAN. Because of the stateless nature of this protocol, it has been misused for illegitimate activities. These activities lead to the most devasting attacks like Denial of Service, Man-in-the-Middle, host impersonation, sniffing, and cache poisoning. Though various host-based and network-based intrusion detection/prevention techniques exist, they fail to provide a complete solution for this type of poisoning. This paper analyzes the existing defence systems against ARP attacks and proposes three different techniques for detecting and preventing the ARP attacks. An analysis of security solutions for ARP poisoning attacks and its effects on medical computing

Today in the digital era of computing, most of the network attacks are caused by sniffing the sensitive data over the network. Among various types of sniffing attacks, ARP sniffing causes most of the LAN attacks (wired and wireless LAN coexist). ARP sniffing causes poisoning of ARP cache or spoofing. Through ARP sniffing, the attacker tries to know the (IP, MAC) pair of victim's system available in ARP table or ARP request-reply packet passed over the network and either exploits victim's resources or creates a situation to deny victim's services for its legitimate users. This in-turn causes MITM, DoS or DDoS attacks. The major cause for these attacks is lack of effective authentication mechanisms with ARP or RARP protocols used for address resolution. This paper provides the working principle of ARP protocol and a method to mitigate the attacks caused by ARP cache poisoning. The proposed framework compares the IP-MAC pair in the ARP and Ethernet headers and if any fake entry is suspected, the information is updated in the fake list and a message is sent to the gateway or router to alert it from cache poisoning attacks. A framework to mitigate ARP sniffing attacks by cache poisoning

Security in this world of digital computing plays a typical role, since all the operations are automated and large volumes of data are being maintained in the servers. Cloud computing is one of the evolving technologies where a huge volume of storage is made on-line, data and services are also distributed. Because of its distributed nature, they have become easy targets for the intruders to exploit the information. The well known Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is the most prominent attacks in this area of computing. DDoS is the single largest threat to internet and internet of things. This paper provides a wide survey on various DDoS attacks, their vulnerabilities and countermeasures proposed against them. Also this paper provides an in-depth analysis on effects of DDoS attacks in the Cloud environment. Through the analysis done it will be useful for designing a secured cloud infrastructure which will abide the DDoS attacks. © 2014 IEEE.
