Abstract
Seven different bacterial strains were isolated from chlorpyrifos contaminated paddy field. Isolates were characterized on the basis of phenotypic and biochemical characterization. Isolates were identified as Serratia sp., Citrobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp., Enterobacter sp., Klebsiella sp., Bacillus sp., and Alcaligenes sp. Bacterial strains were tested for their tolerance to the pesticide through minimum inhibitory concentration. MIC results revealed that among all the isolates, Enterobacter sp. were able to tolerate up to 1000 mg L-1 of chlorpyrifos. Growth kinetics analysis showed that the bacterial isolates were able to grow in the medium containing chlorpyrifos as the sole carbon source. All the isolates were further tested for their antibiotic susceptibility against six different antibiotics, penicillin, ampicillin, bacitracin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, rifampicin. Alcaligenes sp., Bacillus sp., Serratia sp., were exhibited multiple resistance to six different antibiotics. From this study it has been shown that all the pesticide tolerant isolates were also resistant to one or more antibiotics. © RJPT All right reserved.
