Abstract
This paper presents the review on experimental and analytical studies on the performance of concrete when exposed to high temperature. Concrete when exposed to high temperatures, the free water evaporates and above 150° C the chemically bound water is released from hydrated calcium silicate, which reaches its peak at 270° C. The dehydration of matrix and thermal expansion of aggregate gives rise to internal stresses and from 300° C micro cracks start developing. If concrete is heated at less than 300° C, it can recover after fire by absorbing moisture from air, but when micro cracks develop, strength loss is permanent and it is also susceptible for environmental impact. To understand the behavior of concrete under elevated temperature, it is necessary that several factors has to be taken into account such as workability of concrete, type of cement, size of aggregate, water cement ratio, cover to the reinforcement. Though much attention has been bestowed over the performance of concrete under room temperature conditions, the study on behavior of RCC subjected to elevated temperature is gaining momentum. © Research India Publications.
