A review on emulsified fuels and their application in diesel engine

The emission norms of diesel engines are turned more stringent due to continuous increasing of environmental pollutants. Thus, global researchers explore to reduce emissions from diesel engines by fulfilling the performance parameters. The major emissions in the diesel engines are the NOx emissions due to the higher combustion temperatures. Generally, dual fuel engines play a vital role in regulating both emission and performance parameters. Diesel engines are converted to dual fuel mode by using the various techniques such as blend, fumigation, and emulsion. Among these, water-diesel emulsion (WiDE) also can lessen the emissions of NOx and other pollutants promptly. It is observed that the combination of emulsified fuel and the gaseous fuels showed a simultaneous improvement in the thermal efficiency and reduction of NOx emissions. Various emulsion preparation techniques and effects of different gaseous fuels used with emulsified fuels in bifuel engines have been reviewed in this paper. Review on effects of performance, emission and combustion characteristics of emulsified fuel in bifuel engine

The Water Diesel Emulsion (WiDE) fuel shows nepotism in terms of environmental and economical aspects. In the present investigation, WiDE is used as fuel for the diesel engine. Here, WiDE was prepared with various water percentages in the range of 0 to 15 using the non ionic surfactant with a HLB value of 6.31. The WiDE was prepared by using ultrasonic probe Sonicator and the mean diameter of water droplet was measured by using the dynolite microscope. The investigation was run on a diesel engine with WiDE as fuel, for finding the effect of performance, emission, and combustion characteristics. The engine was operated at a compression ratio of 17.5 with variable loads from 0 to 100% with an increment of 25% load. From the obtained results, it shows that emulsion fuels show less NOX emission when compared with the pure diesel. The amount of water concentration shows the greater effect on NOX emissions. From the obtained results, WiDE 10 shows greater break thermal efficiency due to micro explosion phenomenon and the WiDE 15 shows higher cylinder pressure. But the emulsion fuel produced higher HC and CO2 emissions when compared with the diesel. © TJPRC Pvt. Ltd.

Effects of Water Diesel Emulsion on Diesel Engine

Exploitation of the natural reserves of petroleum products has put a tremendous onus on the automotive industry. Increasing pollution levels and the depletion of the petroleum reserves have lead to the search for alternate fuel sources for internal combustion engines. Usage of vegetable oils poses some challenges like poor spray penetration, valve sticking and clogging of injector nozzles. Most of these problems may be solved by partial substitution of diesel with vegetable oil. In this work, the performance and emission characteristics of a direct injection diesel engine fueled by waste cooking oil-diesel emulsion with different water contents are evaluated. The use of waste cooking oil-diesel emulsion lowers the peak temperature, which reduces the formation of NOx. Moreover the phenomenon of micro explosion that results during the combustion of an emulsified fuel finely atomizes the fuel droplets and thus enhances combustion. Experiments show that CO concentration is reduced as the water content is increased and it is seen that 20% water content gives optimum results. Also, there is a significant reduction in NOx emissions.
