The concept of market power has gained its importance after the electric power industry started a process of transition and restructuring since early 1990s or so. In this competitive electricity market, the operational and the physical constraints of the network possess major threat to the market by the generation companies in exercising its market power. This paper presents a comprehensive review on market power with various indices which were used in market power analysis and the evolution of research and development in the field of market power. The literature work presented in this paper has been divided into various sections to facilitate the upcoming researchers who carry out their research in the area of market power under various environments. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Application of Cubic Spline Interpolation Technique in Power Systems: A Review

This paper proposes a methodology to utilize support vector machines (SVM) as a regressor tool for predicting market power. Both the companies, i.e., Generation (Gencos) and the Distribution (Discos), can utilize this tool to forecast market power on their perspective. Attributes and criterion are to be chosen properly to classify market power. In this paper, the effectiveness of SVM technique in predicting market power is formulated. Independent system operator (ISO) can also use this tool as regressor and it is discussed elaborately. Both linear and nonlinear kernels are compared. Nodal must run share (NMRS) is used as an index for predicting market power. A sample of three-bus system consisting of two generators and one load/two loads is used to illustrate the study. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2016.

Prediction of Market Power Using SVM as Regressor Under Deregulated Electricity Market

In a deregulated market environment, the calculation of market power is one of the top priorities of the bodies involved in the market. The bodies generally involved such as the Generation companies (GENCOs), Distribution companies (DISCOs) look towards maximizing profit whereas the RTO/ISOs look to attain a zero market power environment. In this paper, Must Run Share and Nodal Must Run Share (NMRS) is used as an index to calculate market power. To focus upon the fast, accurate calculations and understanding the trends of market power under system changes such as various load conditions, transmission line outage and generator outage, Cubic's Spline Interpolation is used as a technique to interpolate between market powers calculated over a few operating condition set points. A demonstration of the employment of such a system is represented in this paper which will help in achieving the objectives of the players or firms involved in the electricity market. This system will be dynamic enough to suggest the operating conditions for a desired level of market power for any of the above named firms under unexpected system changes. The work is done on IEEE 14 bus test system on the MATLAB version R2012b. © 2015 IEEE.

Restructuring has brought about considerable changes by the virtue of which electricity is now a commodity and has converted into deregulated one. Such a competitive market has paved way for innumerable participants. This has led to overloading and congestion of transmission lines. Moreover, open access transmission network has ingenerated a more intensified problem of congestion. Thus, congestion management in power systems is germane and of central importance to the power industry.
