This paper presents a literature review on the methods for solving the machine-part cell formation (MPCF) problem with alternative process plans, commonly known as the generalized group technology problem (GGT). Various approaches including mathematical programming, heuristic approaches, metaheuristic methodologies and artificial intelligence techniques are addressed. In addition to the discussions on the shortcomings of some of the methods for solving the GGT, a comparative evaluation on the solutions achieved by various methods are presented for 25 datasets gathered from the literature. Finally, suggestions and directions for future research are proposed. © Research India Publications.
