A single phase cascaded five level Quasi Switched Boost Inverter based on switched capacitor structure

Abstract
Multi Level Inverters (MLIs) are gaining more attention in medium voltage, high power applications. This paper presents a single phase Cascaded Five level quasi Switched Boost Inverter (CFqSBI) topology based on Switched Capacitor (SC) structure. The traditional cascaded MLI is able to produce an N level staircase output voltage waveform without any boost in the input voltage. The significant advantage of the CFqSBI topology is that it can boost the available dc input voltage along with the inversion operation compared to a conventional MLI due to the addition of switched capacitor structure. The design, modes of operation and steady state analysis of CFqSBI are elaborated. A modified phase shifted Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) algorithm is used to produce the firing pulses. The entire structure is simulated and analyzed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. An experimental prototype of the proposed topology is designed for the output power of 200W to validate the operating principle of the proposed topology. © 2018 IEEE.
