Abstract
The central aim of my paper is to analyse the characters present in the novel Hullaballo in the Guava Orchard with regard to their middle class life. Sampath Chawla is the central character of the novel around which the situations and circumstances revolve. The paper advocates SampathChawla’s quest for identity, superstitious belief of the Shahkhot people and the greediness of middle-class family. Sampath appears as a representative of Indian youth generation who struggles hard for fulfilling his desires and dreams due to his middle-class condition. The novel appears as a typical Indian story with funny events and situations which could be seen in every day Indian scenario. Sampath is not happy with his job and he escapes from it and searches peace and harmony in the Guava Orchard. His aim is to earn money through his falsifying image as a saint. This attitude is found in many Indian youth who attain a false image inorder to earn their living. The entire family of Sampathsupports him finally though they reject it in the initial stage. Kiran Desai brilliantly depicts the realistic picture of Indian background in her novel. Thus the events in the storypaves way for analyzing the novel as an Indian middle-class family saga, since the family members play a vital role in reviving the life of SampathChawala. © Research India Publications.
