A new method for polygonal approximation is presented. The method is based on Pavlidis' concept of 'almost collinearity' of a set of points. The collinearity is measured by the area and perimeter of triangles. The method is applicable to digital curves with uniformly spaced points as well as non-uniformly spaced points. © 1992.
