The paper describes the feasibility of anoxic ammonia oxidation and further studies using oxides of manganese coated on inert sand for ammonia removal from wastewaters. The results of the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) study showed potential of anoxic ammonia oxidation to nitrate using flocculent seed biomass sourced from Activated Sludge Process (ASP). Batch studies for kinetic order of reaction and for optimization of pH and temperature using adapted biomass for anoxic ammonia oxidation showed zero order with rate constant of 0.58 mg/L-h and optimal values of pH at 7 and temperature at 30 °C. The nitrate removal from the reactor as nitrogen was found to be by denitrification process. The anoxic SBR operation showed promising results to treat moderate concentrations of ammonia containing synthetic wastewater. ©2013 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY. All rights reserved.
