Abstract
This paper proposes a new hybrid pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy instead of the traditional sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). A generalized inverter structure has been recently described in the literature. It presents the trinary sources, but no examinations are made for the binary dc sources. In this paper, a binary dc source multilevel inverter is presented to extend the possible number of levels with reduced total harmonic distortion (THD). The multilevel inverter structure is investigated for both symmetric and asymmetric binary sources. A detailed study of the proposed dc source structure is conferred through an example with a 15-level inverter. The proposed hybrid PWM strategy is used to trigger the gate of the inverter. Alternative Phase Opposition Disposition (APOD) strategy is implemented in both symmetric and asymmetric inverter structure. Simulation results of the proposed multilevel inverter are obtained in MATLAB/SIMULINKand also the performance parameters with different modulation indices are tabulated. © 2015, Research India Publications.
