Surface engineering of LENS-Ti-6Al-4V to obtain nano- and micro-surface topography for orthopedic application

Austenitic stainless steel (SS316L) is one of the important engineering materials used widely in biomedical implants, due its superior mechanical properties and excellent wear resistance and corrosion. Wear Resistance and surface finish are the important properties governing the suitability of the material to be a bio implant. Traditional finishing of SS316L using grinding process results in micro-cracks due to work hardening of the surface, which leads to reduced strength and reliability of the finished parts. Recently, Magnetic Field Assisted Abrasive Finishing (MFAAF) process has gained a lot of interest among the researchers, due its cost effectiveness, and better control of finishing forces using the magnetic field. In this paper, an attempt has been made to compare the reciprocating sliding wear behaviour of SS316L grinded samples and MFAAF finished surfaces with the load of 50N. The wear studies were carried out on samples before and after MFAAF process for comparative purposes. From the wear test, it is found that the wear rate of the MFAAF finished surfaces is about three times less than the grinding finished surface. In addition, Scanning electron microscopy has been used to interpret wear behaviour in grinded samples and MFAAF finished surfaces; their microstructures were observed and results are presented.

Investigations on wear behavior of Magnetic Field Assisted Abrasive Finished SS316L material

For many decades the failure of titanium implants due to corrosion and wear were approached individually and their synergic effect was not considered. In recent past, developments and understanding of the tribocorrosion aspects have thrown deeper understanding on the failure of implants and this has been reviewed in this article extensively.Medline, google scholar and Embase search was conducted to identify studies published between 1993 and 2016 which were related to the analysis of degradation mechanism which the dental implants undergo after implantation.In-vitro tests has been extensively carried out to evaluate the tribocorrosion behavior of titanium based dental implants. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the tangible behavior of materials under in-vivo condition, because the in-vitro experiments are conducted using different testing protocols and conditions (solutions, pH, time, equipment, and testing parameters). Hence, there is an urgent need to perform round-robin test in different laboratories which will help to overcome the gap between in-vitro and in-vivo conditions.Tribocorrosion has been identified as the major degradation mechanisms that result in the failure of dental implants. Hence, it is of utmost importance to improve the service period of dental implants by reducing the tribocorrosion effects through developing new dental implant materials using nobler alloying elements or through modifying the surface of the implants. In order to have a thorough understanding of tribocorrosion behavior and failure mechanisms, round robin test are to be conducted and new protocols/standards are to be developed for the testing of implants.

Degradation mechanisms and future challenges of titanium and its alloys for dental implant applications in oral environment

In the past 2 decades, wollastonite has been studied thoroughly for its application as a bone implant material due to its biocompatibility, high mechanical strength, and excellent bioactivity when compared to calcium phosphates bioceramics. Wollastonite was prepared through the low-temperature sol-gel combustion method using urea as the fuel, nitrate ions and nitric acid as the oxidizer. Calcium nitrate and tetraethyl orthosilicate were taken as the source of calcium and silica. The synthesized wollastonite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for the identification of characteristic functional group and powder X-ray diffraction for the phase identification. Employing urea as a fuel resulted in needle-like morphology of the particles, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was observed that the needle-like morphology enhances the mechanical properties such as elasticity and compressive strength and also increases the surface area of the material, which could help in a rapid deposition of hydroxyapatite layer. These properties of wollastonite warrant its application as a new artificial bone material in the field of hard tissue engineering.

Influence of needle-like morphology on the bioactivity of nanocrystalline wollastonite &ndash; an in vitro study

Ti-6Al-4V biocompatible material to be used as an implant, fabricated by Electron Beam Melting, was investigated for mechanical properties viz. hardness, grain size and porosity. Phase characterization was analysed by X-ray diffraction; morphological and micro structural features were assessed by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Optical Microscope respectively. The as-produced Electron beam melted Ti-6Al-4V sample had increased surface roughness and a thick surface oxide layer. The corrosion behaviour in simulated body fluid environment was compared for wrought and Electron beam melted Ti-6Al-4V samples by performing anodic polarization measurement using sequencer computer controlled potentiostat. The Electron beam melted sample had the corrosion rate of 0.0148 mils per year and wrought sample had 0.0196 mils per year.
