Segregation of Mo is one of the most detrimental problems associated with the welding of super-austenitic stainless steels. The present study articulates the effects of fillers on the microstructure and mechanical properties of pulsed current gas tungsten arc (PCGTA) welded joints of AISI 904L. Four different fillers namely ERNiCrMo-4, ERNiCrMo-10, ERNiCrMo-14 and ERNiCu-7 were employed for joining 5 mm thick plates of AISI 904L. Efforts had been taken to investigate the effect of filler wires on the segregation of Mo in the fusion zone. Studies attested to the retention of Mo in the dendritic regions while employing Ni-Mo rich fillers. Evidently, Mo in the fusion zones was comparatively greater than that in the parent metal. Microstructure studies revealed the formation of unmixed zones at the weld interface while employing these fillers. Migrated grain boundaries were prominent in the fusion zone of ERNiCu-7 weldments. Tensile studies demonstrated that failures occurred at the parent metal of AISI 904L irrespective of fillers employed. Charpy V-notch studies showed that the impact toughness at the cap zones of the weldments was superior to the root regions for all the cases of the weldments. Also, the welded coupons were subjected to cyclic hot corrosion studies at 650 °C in a synthetic molten salt mixture containing K2SO4 + 60% NaCl for 50 cycles. The corrosion studies attested that the fusion zone employing ERNiCrMo-14 exhibited better corrosion resistance than the other fillers and also the parent metal employed in the study. Surface analytical techniques were employed to investigate the hot corroded species. © 2016 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers

Effects of filler metals on the segregation, mechanical properties and hot corrosion behaviour of pulsed current gas tungsten arc welded super-austenitic stainless steel

This research article reports the effect of filler metals on the weldability, microstructure, tensile strength, and impact toughness of bimetallic joints involving ferritic stainless steel (AISI 430) and super-austenitic stainless steel (AISI 904L). These dissimilar combinations were obtained using continuous current (CC) and pulsed current (PC) gas tungsten arc-welding (GTAW) processes, employing duplex stainless steel (ER2553) and Inconel 625 (ERNiCrMo-3) fillers. Microstructure studies revealed the presence of grain boundary martensite and a slight grain coarsening effect in the HAZ of AISI 430 for all the cases. The study also inferred that both CCGTA and PCGTA welding employing these fillers resulted in better joint strength by observing failure at the parent metal of AISI 430 in all the trials. Impact toughness was found to be better for the PCGTA weldments employing ERNiCrMo-3 filler due to the refinement of grains. The impact studies showed that the root pass corroborated higher toughness values than the cap zone for all the cases. Based on the structure–property relationships, this study recommends the use of PCGTA employing ERNiCrMo-3 for joining AISI 430 and AISI 904L. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York and ASM International.

Effect of Filler Metals on the Structure–Property Relationships of Continuous and Pulsed Current GTA Welds of AISI 430 and AISI 904L

This investigation has been performed to characterize the microstructure and mechanical properties of the GTA and PCGTA welded dissimilar combinations of Inconel 625 superalloy and AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel. These welds were obtained by employing ERNiCrMo-3 filler metal. The weldments were characterized by the combined techniques of optical microscopy and SEM/EDAX analysis. Hardness and tensile studies were conducted to assess the mechanical properties of the weldments. Tensile studies showed that the fracture had occurred at the parent metal of AISI 304 side in both the cases.

Characterization of Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Inconel 625 and AISI 304 Dissimilar Weldments

This paper investigates the weldability, metallurgical and mechanical properties of the UNS 32750 super-duplex stainless steels joints by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) employing ER2553 and ERNiCrMo-4 filler metals. Impact and tensile studies envisaged that the weldments employing ER2553 exhibited superior mechanical properties compared to ERNiCrMo-4 weldments. Microstructure studies performed using optical and SEM analysis clearly exhibited the different forms of austenite including widmanstatten austenite on the weld zone employing ER2553 filler. Also the presented results clearly reported the effect of filler metals on strength and toughness during the multi-pass welding. This research article addressed the improvement of tensile and impact strength using appropriate filler wire without obtaining any deleterious phases. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
