Control of speed and torque in matrix converter fed BLDC motor using FPGA controller

Abstract
In industrial areas, brushless DC motors (BLDC) are widely used. The BLDC motors are driven by conventional pulse width modulated (PWM) voltage source inverters and matrix converters. A three phase matrix converter is used in this paper to drive the three phase BLDC motor, which eliminates the bulky DC link energy storage element. A three phase matrix converter converts the three phase AC power supply to a three phase AC voltage of variable amplitude and variable frequency. A control technique is designed for the generation of switching pulses for the three phase matrix converter. For the control of speed of the motor a PI controller and fuzzy logic controller are designed and a hysteresis current controller also designed for the control of motor current and torque. The control schemes are designed and tested separately. The simulation results of two schemes are compared and contrasted in this paper. The results prove that the fuzzy logic control scheme outperforms the PI control scheme in terms of dynamic performance of the BLDC motor. Simulation results are validated by the experimental setup.
