Providing seamless connectivity along the transit is the major research area in Vehicular Adhoc NETwork (VANET). With the help of multiple wireless technologies, the vehicles are able to talk with road side units (RSU) and also with other neighboring vehicles. In this scenario, if a vehicle moves from one coverage area which is supported by one network to other coverage area then the ongoing communication should be carried over, which is possible with the help of vertical handover (VHO) techniques. In this paper, a new method for handover necessity estimation is done using traveling time calculation, and threshold time prediction. The main objective is to increase the connectivity time by reducing the handover failure rate and unnecessary handover rate. The paper support the results with a simulation study and also compared with conventional methods. © 2017 IEEE.
