Abstract
Depleted fossil fuel resources and environmental concern has increased, renewable energy sources and improving power management technologies have become a very important in engineering sector. Using a solar panel or an array of panels or wind turbine without a controller that can perform Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) will often result in wasted power, which ultimately results in the need to install more panels for the same power requirement. For smaller/cheaper devices that have the battery connected directly to the panel, this will also result in premature battery failure or capacity loss, due to the lack of a proper end-of-charge procedure and higher voltage. In the short term, not using an MPPT controller will result in a higher installation cost and, in time, the costs will escalate due to eventual equipment failure. This paper deals with the design of the Maximum Power Point Tracker using Proteus Software stimulation and real time hardware implementation of the algorithm for solar panel and wind turbine. The method to optimize the power obtained by the solar panel and the wind turbine in order to capture the highest amount of energy despite the fact that the solar irradiation and the cell temperature is never constant. The algorithm called "Perturb and Observe" algorithm has been implemented thereby developing a novel MPPT Algorithm. Also the algorithm implements how to charge the battery used for storing the energy obtained at the effective mode with the proper charge algorithm. All the algorithm has been developed in C Programming language and has been verified using Proteus Stimulation Software. © Research India Publications.
