Abstract
Today, NVH characteristic of a vehicle has become the primary focus for vehicle manufacturer because of market competition and legislative requirements. This is true for all segment vehicles right from economic class of passenger car to heavy commercial vehicles. Addition to ergonomic design of driver seating position, easily accessible instrument panels, due importance is given to minimize the driver fatigue level during prolonged driving scenario. The objective of current study is to investigate the vibration transfer and resonant characteristics of a sub-system called 'steering system' of a van type passenger vehicle to address the NVH issues of a whole vehicle. This paper presents the modal study of steering system and its influence for the vibration level measured at driver vehicle interface for a van type passenger vehicle. In the first step, steering wheel and steering column resonant frequencies are predicted through numerical and experimental modal techniques. In the second step, operational acceleration responses at the driver contact points are measured. In the final step, the critical frequencies of steering system are identified through frequency response analysis carried out at component level as well as at vehicle level; further, the necessary modifications, if any are proposed through numerical model modification in terms of geometry and material. © 2018 FISITA.
