Integration of green chemistry principles to nanotechnology is one of the key issues in nanoscience research. Biological methods were used to synthesize metal and metal oxide nanoparticles of specific shape and size since they enhance the properties of nanoparticles in greener route. Plant-mediated methods devoid the use of toxic chemicals in the synthetic protocols which has adverse effects on the environment. Owing to the rich biodiversity of plants and their potential secondary constituents, plants and plant parts have gained attention in recent years as medium for nanoparticles' synthesis. In this review, we present the current status of nanoparticles synthesis using devastated crops.

Devastated crops: multifunctional efficacy for the production of nanoparticles

The eco-friendly synthesis of nanoparticles through green route from plant extracts have renowned a wide range of application in the field of modern science, due to increased drug efficacy and less toxicity in the nanosized mediated drug delivery model. In the present study, our research groups have biosynthesized the stable and cost effective copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) from the leaves of (Ormocarpum cochinchinense) O. cochinchinense. The synthesis of crystalline CuO NPs from the leaf extract of O. cochinchinense were confirmed by various analytical techniques like UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) pattern. Further the synthesized CuO NPs were screened for anticancer activity on human colon cancer cell lines (HCT-116) by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-tiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-tetrazolium bromide) assay. The obtained result inferred that the synthesized CuO NPs demonstrated high anticancer cytotoxicity on human colon cancer cell lines (HCT-116) with IC50 value of 40μgmL-1 were discussed briefly in this manuscript.

Biosynthesis and characterization of copper oxide nanoparticles and its anticancer activity on human colon cancer cell lines (HCT-116)

In recent decades, several scientists focused their process towards nanoparticles synthesis by using various sustainable approaches. Cocos nucifera (C. nucifera) was one of the versatile trees in tropical regions which also can act as a thrust quencher in all over the world. Cocos nucifera coir was one of the waste by-products in all coconut-refining industries and with the help C. nucifera coir, Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were synthesized. Green-synthesized spherical-shape Pd NPs were over layered by secondary metabolites from C. nucifera coir extract and with an average particle size of 62 ± 2 nm, which were confirmed by morphological analysis. Eco-friendly mediated Pd NPs were further subjected to several biological applications like larvicidal against Aedes aegypti (A. aegypti) and anti-feedent, ovicidal, and oviposition deterrent against agricultural pest Callasobruchus maculates (C. maculates) and compared with C. nuciferacoir methanolic extract, which results in LC50 value of 288.88 ppm and LC90 value of 483.06 ppm using LSD-Tukey’s test against dengue vector (A. aegypti). Cocos nucifera coir methanolic extract shows significant output while compared with Pd NPs towards anti-feedent assays; ovicidal activity and oviposition deterrent were discussed here. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Cocos nucifera coir-mediated green synthesis of Pd NPs and its investigation against larvae and agricultural pest

Currently phytochemical approach for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles plays a major role. In this manuscript phytochemical synthesis of Ni-Pd bi-metallic nanoparticles (Ni-Pd NPs) were subjected for various biological applications like pesticidal, larvicidal and ovicidal activities. The synthesized Ni-Pd NPs were confirmed by various characterization techniques, The XRD pattern confirms the formation of Ni-Pd NPs in purest crystalline form and it matches with the Joint Committee Powder Diffraction Standard data of JCPDS: 65-5788. The crystalline sizes of bi-metallic nanoparticles were found to be 33 nm which is calculated from Scherrer equation. TEM images clear cuts the spherical particle of Pd NPs with over layered by Ni NPs. The TEM histogram analysis helps to find the average particle size of Ni-Pd NPs as 34 ± 2 nm. The EDAX spectrum also confirms the presence of palladium and nickel atom. Further the synthesized bi-metallic nanoparticles were subjected for larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti (A. aegypti) which resulted in LC50 and LC90 of 288.88 ppm and 483.06 ppm respectively. Also in this manuscript phyto-synthesized Ni-Pd NPs were subjected to antifeedant activity against Callosobruchus maculatus (C. maculatus) and ovicidal activity against eggs of C. maculatus were performed. © 2016

Coir mediated instant synthesis of Ni-Pd nanoparticles and its significance over larvicidal, pesticidal and ovicidal activities

Methanolic extract of Cocos nucifera (C. nucifera) was collected using Soxhlet apparatus. C. nucifera methanolic extract was used to prepare Nickel nanoparticles (Ni NPs). Eco-friendly synthesized Ni NPs were confirmed by several analytical techniques such as UV–Visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Zeta potential. The obtained results infer that green synthesized Ni NPs are in cubical shape with an average particle size of 47 nm. Synthesized Ni NPs were subjected to pesticidal activity against agricultural pest Callasobruchus maculates (C. maculates) which resulted in 97.31% mortality. These results were compared with commercially available standard Azadirachtin. Also we have studied larvicidal activity against Aedes ageypti (A. ageypti) larvae which resulted in LC 50 and LC 90 value of 259.24, 446.99 ppm respectively and the result proved to be significant which were processed by ANOVA LSD Tukey's test. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Spectroscopic investigation of biosynthesized nickel nanoparticles and its larvicidal, pesticidal activities

The use of plant extract to synthesize nanoparticle has been considered as one of the eco-friendly method. Additionally, it is a strong alternate for conventional methods which includes chemical and physical approach. In this study, microwave assisted extraction of Carissa edulis (C. edulis) at 70 °C and 400 W was used to extract the secondary metabolites. Further, the metabolites were used as capping agent and Zn (NO3)2 as the metal precursor to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). UV–Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, XRD, SEM and HR-TEM were used for the characterization of nanoparticles. The Surface Plasmon Resonance around 358 nm from the UV–Vis spectroscopy result represents the ZnO NPs formation. The FT-IR confirms the presence of functional groups that acts as the capping agent for the synthesis of ZnO NPs. The crystalline structure of nanoparticles is revealed in the XRD result, morphology showed by SEM results and the size of the ZnO NPs were predicted by HR-TEM. We have carried out the photocatalytic degradation of Congo red at 365 nm in photo reactor using ZnO NPs. The result from the photocatalytic degradation Congo red showed rate constant is (− k) 0.4947 with 97{\%} of degradation. This is our first attempt on the C. edulis extract on ZnO NPs preparation and Congo red dye degradation revels that ZnO NPs exhibit good photocatalytic property.

Photocatalytic degradation of Congo red using Carissa edulis extract capped zinc oxide nanoparticles

Phyto-synthesis of transition metal nanoparticles is gaining importance due to their biocompatibility, low toxicity, green approach and environmental friendly nature. We used mesocarp layer extract of Cocos nucifera and was assessed for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The reduction of silver ions occurred when silver nitrate solution was treated with aqueous extract of C. nucifera coir at 60 °C. Synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) particles were confirmed by analysing the excitation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) using UV-vis spectrophotometer at 433. nm. Further TEM analysis confirmed the range of particle size as 23 ± 2. nm. The XRD spectrum showed the characteristic Bragg peaks of 1. 1. 1, 2. 0. 0, 2. 2. 0 and 3. 1. 1 facets of the face centered cubic silver nanoparticles and confirms that these nanoparticles are crystalline in nature. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) of coir extract confirms the presence of hydrocarbon such as nonacosane and heptacosane which may possibly influence the reduction process and stabilization of silver nanoparticles. This is the first account of C. nucifera coir assisted synthesis of biogenic Ag nanoparticles; the nanoparticles are notably smaller and better faceted compared with those synthesized by A. squamosa extracts previously reported. Synthesized Ag nanoparticles were effective anti-larvicidal agent's against Anopheles stephensi and C. quinquefasciatus. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Low-cost and eco-friendly phyto-synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Cocos nucifera coir extract and its larvicidal activity

Objective: To investigate the larvicidal activity of synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) utilizing aqueous bark extract of Ficus racemosa (F. racemosa) was tested against fourth instar larvae of filariasis vector, Culex quinquefasciatus (Cx. quinquefasciatus) and japanese encephalitis vectors, Culex gelidus (Cx. gelidus). Methods: The synthesized Ag NPs was characterized by UV-vis spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The larvicidal activities were assessed for 24 h against the larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. gelidus with varying concentrations of aqueous bark extract of F. racemosa and synthesized Ag NPs. LC50 and r2 values were calculated. Results: The maximum efficacy was observed in crude aqueous extract of F. racemosa against the larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. gelidus (LC50=67.72 and 63.70 mg/L; r2=0.995 and 0.985) and the synthesized Ag NPs (LC50=12.00 and 11.21 mg/L; r2=0.997 and 0.990), respectively. Synthesized Ag NPs showed the XRD peaks at 2 θ values of 27.61, 29.60, 35.48, 43.48 and 79.68 were identified as (210), (121), (220), (200) and (311) reflections, respectively. The FTIR spectra of Ag NPs exhibited prominent peaks at 3 425, 2 878, 1 627 and 1 382 in the region 500-3 000 cm-1. The peaks correspond to the presence of a stretching vibration of (NH) C=O group. SEM analysis showed shape in cylindrical, uniform and rod with the average size of 250.60 nm. Conclusions: The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using bark aqueous extract of F. racemosa and its larvicidal activity against the larvae of disease spreading vectors. The maximum larvicidal efficacy was observed in the synthesized Ag NPs. © 2013 Hainan Medical College.

Larvicidal activity of green synthesized silver nanoparticles using bark aqueous extract of Ficus racemosa against Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex gelidus

In the present study, the biosynthesis of rutile TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) was achieved by a novel, biodegradable and convenient procedure using fruit peel Annona squamosa aqueous extract. This is the first report on the new, simple, rapid, eco-friendly and cheaper methods for the synthesis of rutile TiO2 NPs at lower temperature using agricultural waste. Rutile TiO2 NPs were characterized by UV, XRD, SEM, TEM and EDS studies. The UV-Vis spectrophotometer results were promising and showed a rapid production of TiO2 NPs with a surface plasmon resonance occurring at 284 nm. The formation of the TiO2 NPs as observed from the XRD spectrum is confirmed to be TiO2 particles in the rutile form as evidenced by the peaks at 2θ = 27.42°, 36.10°, 41.30° and 54.33° when compared with the literature. The TEM images showed polydisperse nanoparticles with spherical shapes and size 23 ± 2 nm ranges. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Efficient phyto-synthesis and structural characterization of rutile TiO2 nanoparticles using Annona squamosa peel extract

Plant products may be alternative sources of parasitic control agents, since they constitute a rich source of bioactive compounds that are eco-friendly and nontoxic products. The plant extracts are good and safe alternatives due to their low toxicity to mammals and easy biodegradability. In the present study, fruit peel aqueous extract of Annona squamosa (Annonaceae) extracted by immersion method exhibited adulticidal activity against Haemaphysalis bispinosa (Acarina: Ixodidae) and the hematophagous fly, Hippobosca maculata (Diptera: Hippoboscidae), and larvicidal activity against the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae), Anopheles subpictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae). The chemical composition of A. squamosa fruit peel aqueous extract was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major chemical constituent of peel aqueous extract of A. squamosa was identified as 1H- cycloprop[e]azulen-7-ol decahydro-1,1,7-trimethyl-4-methylene- [1ar-(1aα,4aα, 7β, 7 a, β, 7bα)] (28.55%) by comparison of mass spectral data and retention times. The other major constituents present in the aqueous extract were retinal 9-cis- (12.61%), 3,17-dioxo-4-androsten-11alpha-yl hydrogen succinate (6.86%), 1-naphthalenepentanol decahydro-5-(hydroxymethyl)-5,8a-dimethyl-y,2- bis(methylene)-(1α,4aβ,5α,8aα) (14.83%), 1-naphthalenemethanol decahydro -5-(5-hydroxy-3-methyl-3-pentenyl)- 1,4a-di methyl - 6-methylene -(1S-[1α, 4aα, 5α(E), 8aβ] (4.44%), (-)-spathulenol (20.75%), podocarp-7-en-3-one13β-methyl-13-vinyl- (5.98%), and 1-phenanthrene carboxaldehyde 7-ethenyl-1,2,3,4,4a,4,5,6,7,9,10,10a- dodecahydro-1,4a,7-trimethyl-[1R-(1α,4aβ.4bα,7β, 10aα)]-(5.98%). The adult and larval parasitic mortalities observed in fruit peel aqueous extract of A. squamosa were 31, 59, 80, 91, and100%; 27, 42, 66, 87, and 100%; and 33, 45, 68, 92, and 100% at the concentrations of 250, 500, 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 ppm, respectively, against Haemaphysalis bispinosa, Hippobosca maculata, and R. microplus. The observed larvicidal efficacies were 36, 55, 72, 92, 100% and 14, 34, 68, 89, and 100% at 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 ppm, respectively, against A. subpictus and C. quinquefasciatus. The highest parasite mortality was found after 24 h of exposure against Haemaphysalis bispinosa (LC50∈=∈404.51 ppm, r 2∈=∈0.890), Hippobosca maculata (LC50∈= ∈600.75 ppm, r 2∈=∈0.983), the larvae of R. microplus (LC50∈=∈548.28 ppm, r 2∈=∈0.975), fourth-instar larvae of A. subpictus (LC50∈=∈327.27 pm, r 2∈=∈0.970), and C. quinquefasciatus (LC50∈= ∈456.29 ppm, r 2∈=∈0.974), respectively. The control (distilled water) showed nil mortality in the concurrent assay. The χ 2 values were significant at p∈&lt;∈0.05 level. Therefore, the eco-friendly and biodegradable compounds from fruit peel aqueous extract of A. squamosa may be an alternative to conventional synthetic chemicals, particularly in integrated approach for the control of Haemaphysalis bispinosa, Hippobosca maculata, R. microplus, and the medically important vectors A. subpictus and C. quinquefasciatus. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Acaricidal, insecticidal, and larvicidal efficacy of fruit peel aqueous extract of Annona squamosa and its compounds against blood-feeding parasites

Development of reliable and eco-friendly process for the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles is an important step in the field of application of nanotechnology. We have developed modern method by using agriculture waste to synthesize silver nanoparticles by employing an aqueous peel extract of Annona squamosa in AgNO3. Controlled growth of silver nanoparticles was formed in 4 h at room temperature (25 °C) and 60 °C. AgNPs were irregular spherical in shape and the average particle size was about 35 ± 5 nm and it is consistent with particle size obtained by XRD Scherer equation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
