Green synthesis of Silver and Gold Nanoparticles for Enhanced catalytic and bactericidal activity

A green, facile method for the size selective synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using diastase as green reducing and stabilizing agent is reported. The thiol groups present in the diastase are mainly responsible for the rapid reaction rate of silver nanoparticles synthesis. The variation in the size and morphology of AgNPs were studied by changing the pH of diastase. The prepared silver nanoparticles were characterized by using UV–vis, XRD, FTIR, TEM and SAED. The FTIR analysis revealed the stabilization of diastase molecules on the surface of AgNPs. Additionally, in-vitro cytotoxicity experiments concluded that the cytotoxicity of the as-synthesized AgNPs towards mouse fibroblast (3T3) cell lines is dose and size dependent. Furthermore, the present method is an alternative to the traditional chemical methods of size controlled AgNPs synthesis. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Environment friendly approach for size controllable synthesis of biocompatible Silver nanoparticles using diastase

Wound healing, a complex biological process, has attained a lot of attention as dermatologists are primarily interested in stimulated wound closure without formation of scar or a faint scar. The recent upsurgence of nanotechnology has provided novel therapeutic materials in the form of silver and gold nanoparticles which accelerate the wound healing process. The effect of formulated nanoparticles using Coleus forskohlii root extract (green synthesized) has been tried out for ameliorating full thickness excision wounds in albino Wistar male rats. The evaluation of in vivo activity of nanoparticles in wound healing was carried out on open wounds made by excision on the dorsal sides of albino Wistar rats under anesthesia, and the healing of the wounds was assessed. Histological aspects of the healing process were studied by a HE (Hematoxylin and Eosin) staining method to assess various degrees of re-epithelialization and the linear alignment of the granulation tissue whereas Van Gieson's histochemical staining was performed to observe collagen fibers. The healing action shown by the formulated nanoparticles was remarkable during the early stages of wound healing, which resulted in the substantial reduction of the whole healing period. Topical application of formulated gold nanoparticles was found to be more effective in suppressing inflammation and stimulating re-epithelialization compared to silver nanoparticles during the healing process. The results throw light on the amelioration of excision wounds using nanoparticles which could be a novel therapeutic way of improving wound healing in clinical practice. The mechanism of advanced healing action of both types of nanoparticles could be due to their antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Amelioration of excision wounds by topical application of green synthesized, formulated silver and gold nanoparticles in albino Wistar rats

Biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized by Sterculia acuminata fruit extract was characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD, TEM, FTIR, PSA, and Zeta potential studies. Formation of AgNPs is initially confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopic studies with the characteristic band at 426 nm. TEM and XRD reports revealed that AgNPs are highly crystalline and spherical in shape with average particle size of ∼10 nm. PSA studies revealed that average particle size of AgNPs is 10.3 nm which is in close agreement with TEM reports. FTIR studies indicated the presence of different functional groups on the surface of the AgNPs indicating the stability of AgNPs by capping of biomolecules onto the surface which is further supported by zeta potential studies with the negative zeta potential value of -39.2 mV. Further catalytic efficiency synthesized AgNPs was evaluated for the reduction/degradation of various organic dyes such as 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), phenol red (PR) and direct blue 24 (DB24). It was found that degradation of MB and DB24 was faster than that of other dyes. This is the first report on degradation of organic dyes PR and DB24 using NaBH4 as reducing agent in the presence of catalytic amount of AgNPs. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Biofabricated silver nanoparticles as green catalyst in the degradation of different textile dyes

In the present study, silver nanoparticles were rapidly synthesized at room temperature by treating silver ions with the Citrus limon (lemon) extract. The effect of various process parameters like the reductant concentration, mixing ratio of the reactants and the concentration of silver nitrate were studied in detail. In the standardized process, 10(-2)M silver nitrate solution was interacted for 4h with lemon juice (2% citric acid concentration and 0.5% ascorbic acid concentration) in the ratio of 1:4 (vol:vol). The formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by Surface Plasmon Resonance as determined by UV-Visible spectra in the range of 400-500 nm. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the distinctive facets (111, 200, 220, 222 and 311 planes) of silver nanoparticles. We found that citric acid was the principal reducing agent for the nanosynthesis process. FT-IR spectral studies demonstrated citric acid as the probable stabilizing agent. Silver nanoparticles below 50 nm with spherical and spheroidal shape were observed from transmission electron microscopy. The correlation between absorption maxima and particle sizes were derived for different UV-Visible absorption maxima (corresponding to different citric acid concentrations) employing "MiePlot v. 3.4". The theoretical particle size corresponding to 2% citric acid concentration was compared to those obtained by various experimental techniques like X-ray diffraction analysis, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy.
