Abstract
Beta Titanium alloys offer the ability to optimize its microstructure and mechanical properties over a wide scope through thermomechanical processing. In the present work, the effects of a new thermomechanical treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties ofTi-15-3 near beta alloy have been studied. The processing routes includes cold and warm rolling, warm forging followed by single aging. As received Ti 15-3 alloy was deformed by cold rolling and warm forging at below the beta transus temperature. Hardness tests were carried out on the cold and warm rolled samples. The phases present in the deformed samples were identified using XRD analysis. The deformed samples were single aged at temperatures 400,450 and 500 °C for different time intervals. Single aged specimen's hardness was measured by micro Vickers hardness tester and the microstructure evaluation were characterized using optical microscopy. The hardness result indicates decrease in hardness value with increase in the aging temperature from 400°C to 500 °C. Amongst the different single aged specimens, uniaxial tensile test were carried out on the specimens with highest hardness values at a given temperature. An increase in tensile strength was observed for the samples subjected to thermomechanical processing when compared to the as received samples which was delivered in the solution treated condition.
