In this study we investigate the generation of 3D point cloud from 2D CT slices using Discrete Curvelet transformation. The approach relies on initial thresholding to extract only the bony areas from each slice required for feature point extraction. Further Curvelet Transformation is applied to detect the edges from thresholded slices. The edge points are stacked along the Z axis to obtain the 3D point cloud. We show experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm under a different range of data sets which includes Skull, knee and leg bone surface point clouds. The edge detection performance is compared with Laplacian, Sobel and Canny edge detectors. © EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2011.
