This paper investigates the effects of surfactants on microhardness, scratch, wear and friction behaviour of the Ni-P-nano-TiO2 composite coatings. Nano TiO2 particles were co-deposited with electroless Ni-P coating on low carbon steel substrates in the presence of anionic and cationic surfactants-sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) respectively. Results revealed that at an optimum concentration of the surfactants, the coatings obtained a smoother surface, low frictional coefficient, enhanced microhardness and high wear resistance. The findings of scratch test showed that the composite coatings with surfactants exhibited the ability to withstand higher critical load and lower penetration depth. This can be ascribed to the reinforcing action of co-deposited TiO2 nanoparticles in the composite coatings. The cationic surfactant DTAB contributed to the increase in weight percentage of TiO2 in the Ni-P matrix considerably. At critical micelle concentration (CMC) value of the DTAB surfactant, the coatings had the highest weight percent of incorporated TiO2 and showed a better homogenous distribution. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Wear and scratch behaviour of electroless Ni-P-nano-TiO2: Effect of surfactants

Nickel-based multiwalled carbon nanotube (NiMWCNT) composite coatings were electrodeposited over the inner groove of an aluminim alloy rotor with ZnNi interlayer. The surface of the composite coating was investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The hardness of the coating was determined by Vickers method. It was revealed that NiMWCNT composite coating has uniformity in thickness over the surface of the aluminim groove and also better particle distribution over the area. It was found that there was a significant improvement in the microhardness values of NiMWCNT composite coating than uncoated aluminum alloy rotor. In addition, the wear resistance of the composite coated increased nine times than the uncoated substrate. Thus, NiMWCNT composite coated aluminum alloy rotor can enhance the performance and life-time of the rotor in the textile industries. © IMechE 2015.

In this paper, the effects of two different types of surfactants on the properties of Ni-P-TiO2 coating on low carbon steel substrate were investigated. Sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) - anionic surfactant and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) - cationic surfactant were used for the deposition. Deposits were characterized by a high resolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM), an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to study the surface morphology, composition and crystal structure of the coatings respectively. In addition, the influence of surfactants on the corrosion behaviour of Ni-P-TiO2 coatings was also examined using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5wt.% sodium chloride solution. The results showed that at an optimum concentration of cationic surfactant DTAB, uniform distribution of TiO2 particles with no defects was observed. The corrosion properties were improved by the incorporation of TiO2 particles in the Ni-P matrix. The increase in corrosion resistance of the Ni-P-TiO2 coatings significantly depends on the surfactant and its concentration. © 2015 Elsevier B.V..
