Abstract
Energy consumption in wireless sensor networks is found to be a significant problem. In order to overcome this issue, there is a need to develop an energy efficient cluster head selection algorithm. The parameters related to energy efficient need to be included in the proposed algorithm. In this paper, we have proposed a cluster head selection algorithm based on Energy Aware Fast K-means with Particle Swarm Optimization (EA-FKPSO) protocol. The energy efficient parameters are included in the proposed cluster head selection protocol to reduce the energy consumption by the cluster heads. The proposed work is classified into three blocks, namely, clustering using fast K-means, cluster head selection using energy efficient PSO and cluster head evaluation on the basis of energy parameters. The performance of the proposed EA-FKPSO based cluster head selection method is compared with the existing cluster head selection algorithms, namely, PSO-C, PSO-SD and LEACH-C on the basis of Packet Delivery Ratio, Normalized Routing Overhead, End-to-End Delay, Throughput, Network Lifetime, Relative Energy Consumption and Total Energy Consumption. Java network simulator is used in this paper for simulating the EA-FKPSO in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The experimental results proved the good performance of the proposed EA-FKPSO protocol. © 2017, Institute of Advanced Scientific Research, Inc. All rights reserved.
