Abstract
In this paper, an enhanced form of modified Smith predictor (EMSP) is designed for the control of higher order stable systems. The higher order process, whose controller design is practically difficult, is reduced into first order plus delay (FOPDT) and second order plus delay (SOPDT) and thereby designing controllers capable to control servo and regulatory problems of its original higher order process. Model reduction into FOPDT and SOPDT is carried out by step response method and Skogasted half rule method respectively. In the proposed form, controlling is done by separate controller for tracking of set-point and suppressing the disturbance to which the process is been exposed to. For reducing the overshoot in the response, set-point weighting is also included in the control structure. Apart from these controllers, the proposed scheme also facilitates in preserving the robustness at times when uncertainties occur in process dynamics. Two tuning parameters of the controllers are selected in terms of the delay value of the reduced model. The proposed scheme of control for higher order process shows remarkable improvement in performance and robustness considering recent IMC-PI controller for the same and is illustrated through certain specific cases. © 2017 IEEE.
