Abstract
Hybrid metal matrix composites consist of a metal or an alloy matrix with strongly implanted multiple hard B4C reinforcements to enhance the wear resistance properties. Aluminium matrix reinforced with 10 % B4C and 5 % graphite hybrid composite was fabricated by liquid casting route. Wear performance of the hybrid composites was evaluated over load ranges of 20-60N at sliding velocities from 1-4 m/s. The experimental results showed that the wear resistances of hybrid composites were improved along with mechanical properties in comparison to base alloys. The 7075 Al-5wt. % graphite-10 wt.% B4C hybrid composites have superior wear property than that of base alloy as well as 6061 Al - 5wt.% - 10 wt.% B4C hybrid com posites. The hardness and tensile strength of the hybrid composites were also improved by incorporating hard B4C particles along with soft graphite particles. The worn surfaces were examined by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). © 2018 Scibulcom Ltd. All rights reserved.
