<h3>Objective</h3><p>To evaluate the analgesic activity of the ethyl acetate, methanol and aqueous extracts of <i>Pleurotus eous (P. eous)</i> mushroom.</p><h3>Methods</h3><p>The dried fruiting bodies were extracted with ethyl acetate, methanol and water. The analgesic effect of extracts of <i>P. eous</i> were investigated at doses 250 500 and 1 000 mg/kg body weight, using acetic-acid induced writhing, hot-plate, tail immersion and tail-clip tests.</p><h3>Results</h3><p><i>P. eous</i> extracts produced significant reduction in number of writhes induced by intraperitoneal injection of acetic-acid (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05). Moreover, in hot-plate and tail immersion test, all the three extracts significantly raised the pain threshold at different time of observation (0-60 min) in comparison with control (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05). In tail-clip test the extracts also caused a significant inhibition of pain at both the doses used (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05).</p><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The results of present study suggest that extracts of <i>P. eous</i> possess potent analgesic property and could serve as a base for future drugs.</p>

Chemical and biological evaluation of Andrographis echioides leaf extracts collected from the Vellore district in Tamil Nadu, India

<p>Objective: To evaluate the ethyl acetate, methanol and aqueous extracts of dried fruiting bodies of Pleurotus eous for its anti-platelet activity on human volunteer’s blood. And also to analyze the free radical scavenging property of the extracts of P.eous by using various in vitro models. Methods: Anti-platelet activity of dried fruiting bodies of P.eous was evaluated by in vitro model using blood platelets. Inhibition of platelet aggregation was monitored after pre-incubation of platelets with the crude extracts of mushroom P.eous. Antioxidant activities of extracts of P.eous were evaluated by different in vitro experiments, namely, 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide, hydroxyl radical and lipid peroxide radical models. Results: Crude extracts of mushroom P.eous inhibited platelet aggregation dose-dependently which was induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP). At a maximum concentration of 10 mg/mL, methanol extract effected 64.02% inhibition of lipid per-oxidation and 50.12% scavenging effect on superoxide anion radical. Aqueous extract of P.eous have shown 69.43% chelating ability on ferrous ions, 24.27% scavenging effect on hydroxyl radical and 49.57% scavenging effect on DPPH radical at 10 mg/mL. Increasing concentrations of the extract were found to cause progressively decreasing of the intensity of absorbance. Conclusions: Anti-platelet effects could be related in part to the polyphenolic compounds present in the extracts. Antioxidant activity results indicated the free radical scavenging property of the extracts of P.eous which might be due to the high content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids. © 2015, Chinese Association of the Integration of Traditional and Western Medicine and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.</p>

Inhibition of platelet aggregation and in vitro free radical scavenging activity of dried fruiting bodies of Pleurotus eous

Objective: To determine the antioxidant activity, total phenolic and flavonoid content of Petroleum ether extract (PE), Dichloromethane extract (DCM), Ethanol extract (ET) and aqueous extract (AQ) of henna seeds. Methods: Total antioxidant assay (phosphomolybenum method), DPPH radical scavenging assay, reducing power assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay were used to ascertain the potential of seeds as an antioxidant. Results: In all the assays carried out ET showed a greater potential to scavenge DPPH radical, reduce MO (VI) to MO (V) complex and Fe (III) to Fe (II) and to inhibit lipid peroxidation. The IC 50 of ET was far greater than that of the standard, ascorbic acid (AS) in the lipid peroxidation assay. The activity of AQ was lesser when compared with that of ET but greater than PE and DCM. The amount of phenolics and flavonoids were present in higher amounts in ET followed by AQ. Trace amounts of phenolics were detected in PE and DCM, but the amount of flavonoids were below the detection level. The study showed that the antioxidant activity and the concentrations of phenolics and flavonoids are proportionate to each other. Conclusions: Ethanolic extract of henna seeds are efficient antioxidants, which can be utilized for further isolation of active compounds and pharmaceutical applications. {\textcopyright} 2011 Hainan Medical College.
