Abstract

Wireless optical communication[WOC] is a terrestrial line-of-sight (LOS) transmission through the atmosphere which transmits a modulated beam of visible or infrared light through the atmosphere for ground to satellite, satellite to satellite, satellite to ground and between high-rise buildings. WOC can transmit 10 Gbps of data, voice and video communications simultaneously through space at the speed of light. The atmospheric light wave propagation is considerably influenced by the random variations in the refractive index of air pockets .Spatial & temporal variations of air with respect to fluctuations in temperature & pressure of atmospheric termed as Atmospheric Turbulence cause random variation of refractive index results change in direction of propagation and degrades the performance of Wireless optical communication system. Multi-hop or Cooperative wireless optical communication [Relay assisted transmission system can be the most suitable mitigation technique for this issue. © 2015 IAMOT.
