With aim of promoting the employability of green fuels in the synthesis of nano-scaled materials with new kinds of morphologies for multiple applications, successful synthesis of self-assembled NiO nano-sticks was achieved through a 100% green-fuel-mediated hot-plate combustion reaction. The synthesized NiO nano-sticks show excellent photocatalytic activity on Rose Bengal dye and superior antibacterial potential towards both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. © 2017 IOP Publishing Ltd.

A simple and rapid synthesis has been developed to synthesize NiFe2O4 nanoparticles with tunable optical, magnetic and catalytic properties by using Hibiscus rosa sinensis plant extract in the current study. The crystalline structure of the synthesized NiFe2O4 nanoparticles was confirmed by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement analysis. Morphological, elemental, magnetic and optical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles were interpreted by fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), UV–Visible diffused reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), photoluminescence (PL) studies, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). XRD analysis showed the single phase crystalline nature with average crystallite size of 50–70 nm. SEM and EDX analysis recognize the spherical shape nanoparticles and phase purity of the samples. The optical band gap is determined using UV-DRS spectra and is observed to decrease with increasing the calcination temperature. VSM studies obviously demonstrate the ferromagnetic property of the samples. The value of saturation magnetization has decreased with an increase in the calcination temperature and the coercivity is decreased. Additionally, NiFe2O4 nanoparticles were investigated for the catalytic reduction capability for different dyes like Rhodamine-B (Rh-B), Methylene blue (MB), Rose Bengal (RB), and Congo red (CR). It is found that the dye solution was degraded with increasing irradiation time. Hence, the prepared nanoparticles have been used as high potential catalysts for the reduction of organic dyes in the application of waste water treatment. NiFe2O4 is an active agent in catalyzing the oxidation of glycerol to formic acid with good conversion percentage and high selectivity. This catalytic system in the polar solvents, such as, acetonitrile provides the enhanced conversion results. The very important role played by a variety of reaction parameters in deciding the catalytic effectiveness is well established and every parameter has an optimal value to acquire the maximum catalytic activity. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Catalytic studies of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles prepared by conventional and microwave combustion method

The theme of this work is to highlight the significance of green plant extracts in the synthesis of nanostructures. In asserting this statement, herein, we report our obtained results on the synthesis of hexagonal CdSe nanorods preferably oriented along (0002) plane through henna leaf extract-mediated reaction along with a discussion about the structural, morphological and optical properties of the synthesized nanorods. The possible mechanism for the synthesis of CdSe nanorods was explored. The formation of nanorods along (0002) plane was confirmed by the relatively high intensity of the (0002) peak in X-ray diffraction pattern. To account for the experimentally realistic condition, we have calculated the surface energies of hexagonal CdSe surface slabs along the low indexed (0002), ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) and ( 11 2 ¯ 0 ) plane surfaces using density functional theory approach and the calculated surface energy value for (0002) surface is 802.7 mJ m −2, which is higher than ( 11 2 ¯ 0 ) and ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) surfaces. On realizing the calculated surface energies of these slabs, we determined that the combination of ( 11 2 ¯ 0 ) and ( 10 1 ¯ 0 )  planes with lower surface energies will lead to the formation of CdSe nanorods growth along (0002) orientation. Finally, we argue that the design of new greener route for the synthesis of novel functional nanomaterials is highly desired.

Investigation on preferably oriented abnormal growth of CdSe nanorods along (0002) plane synthesized by henna leaf extract-mediated green synthesis

In the present study, we report the green synthesis of NiO nanoparticles using Aegle marmelos as a fuel and this method is ecofriendly and cost effective. The plant Aegle marmelos is used in the field of pharmaceuticals to cure diseases like chronic diarrhea, peptic ulcers and dysentery in India for nearly 5 centuries. The as-prepared nanoparticles were confirmed as pure face centered cubic phase and single crystalline in nature by XRD. The formation of agglomerated spherical nanoparticles was shown by HR-SEM and HR-TEM images. The particle size calculated from HR-SEM was in the range 8–10 nm and it matches with the average crystallite size calculated from the XRD pattern. NiO shows intense emission peaks at 363 and 412 nm in its PL spectra. The band gap of 3.5 eV is observed from DRS studies and the formation of pure Ni–O is confirmed by FT-IR spectra. The as-prepared NiO nanoparticles show super paramagnetic behavior, when magnetization studies are carried out. It is then evaluated for cytotoxic activity towards A549 cell culture, antibacterial activity and photocatalytic degradation (PCD) of 4‑chlorophenol (4‑CP), which is known as the endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC). From the results, it is found that the cell viability of A549 cells was effectively reduced and it showed better antibacterial activity towards gram positive bacterial strains. It is also proved to be an efficient and stable photocatalyst towards the degradation of 4‑CP. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Green synthesis of NiO nanoparticles using Aegle marmelos leaf extract for the evaluation of in-vitro cytotoxicity, antibacterial and photocatalytic properties

In the present work, synthesis of nickel aluminate using Opuntia dilenii haw as plant extract by a microwave combustion method (MCM) and its comparison with the conventional combustion method (CCM) is investigated. O. dilenii haw plant extract simplifies the process, provides an alternative process for a simple and an economical synthesis. The absence of surfactant has led to a simple, cheap and fast method of synthesis of NiAl2O4 nanoparticles. The as-synthesized NiAl2O4 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) studies, high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), diffuses reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The XRD results confirmed the formation of the cubic phase NiAl2O4. The formation of pure nickel aluminate phase was confirmed by FT-IR. The formation of NiAl2O4 nanoparticles was confirmed by HR-SEM and HR-TEM and their possible formation mechanisms were also proposed. MCM could produce NiAl2O4 with uniform size and well-defined shape with crystallinity. The optical property was determined by DRS. NiAl2O4 prepared by the microwave combustion method was found to possess a higher surface area, lower crystallite size than the NiAl2O4 nanoparticles prepared by the conventional combustion method, which in turn has led to the improved performance toward the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. © 2014 King Saud University

Preparation, characterization and catalytic properties of nickel aluminate nanoparticles: A comparison between conventional and microwave method

Tricobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4), a spinel-structured nanoparticle which possesses mixed oxidation states, has been synthesized via a Punica granatum (P. granatum, pomegranate) seed extract-mediated green reaction and has been investigated for its superior catalytic activity in three applications, which include (i) photodegradation of textile dye effluents (TDE) collected from the dyeing industry, Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, India, (ii) catalytic hydrogenation of nitro-aromatic pollutants such as 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitroaniline, and (iii) antibacterial potential in biomedical applications. Prior to the application studies, the synthesized Co3O4 spinel nanoparticles (Co3O4-NPs) were characterized by well-known established techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), and Raman and FT-IR spectroscopies. We have also discussed the probable mechanism and kinetic studies of the catalytic activity of the Co3O4-NPs. Finally, we concluded that the design and development of novel, economic and green synthesis-mediated catalysts such as Co3O4-NPs can exhibit efficient catalytic activity in diverse fields, which is necessary for environmental remediation.

High performance multifunctional green Co3O4 spinel nanoparticles: photodegradation of textile dye effluents, catalytic hydrogenation of nitro-aromatics and antibacterial potential

The present work describes the successful synthesize of spinel magnetic ferrite Mn1-xNixFe2O4 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 &amp; 0.5) nanoparticles via a simple microwave combustion method which was then evaluated for its photocatalytic activity in the degradation of indigo carmine (IC) synthetic dye, a major water pollutant. Our results reveal that the synthesized of Ni2+ doped MnFe2O4 nanoparticles possess well-crystalline pure cubic spinel phase, exhibit excellent optical and magnetic properties. Further, the photocatalytic performance of the synthesized nanoparticles at different concentration ratios of Ni2+ ions was monitored by photocatalytic degradation of indigo carmine synthetic dye under UV (λ = 365 nm) light irradiation. In order to get maximum photocatalytic degradation (PCD) efficiency, we have optimized various parameters, which include catalyst dosage, initial dye concentration, pH and Ni2+ dopant content. It was found that the reaction was facilitated with optimum catalyst dose of 50 mg/100 mL, high dye concentrations of 150 mg/L and acidic pH and among all the synthesized samples, Mn0·5Ni0.5Fe2O4 exhibit superior performance of photocatalytic activity on the degradation of indigo carmine synthetic dye. These results highlighted the potential use of effective, low-cost and easily available photocatalysts for the promotion of wastewater treatment and environmental remediation. In addition, the antibacterial activity of spinel magnetic Mn1–xNixFe2O4 nanoparticles against two Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and two Gram negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) was also examined. Our antibacterial activity results are comparable with the results obtained using the antibiotic, streptomycin. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Studies on the efficient dual performance of Mn1–xNixFe2O4 spinel nanoparticles in photodegradation and antibacterial activity

Green protocols for the synthesis of nickel oxide nanoparticles using Moringa oleifera plant extract has been reported in the present study as they are cost effective and ecofriendly, moreover this paper records that the nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles prepared from green method shows better cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity. The NiO nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The formation of a pure nickel oxide phase was confirmed by XRD and FTIR. The synthesized NiO nanoparticles was single crystalline having face centered cubic phase and has two intense photoluminescence emissions at 305.46 nm and 410 nm. The formation of nano- and micro-structures was confirmed by HRTEM. The in-vitro cytotoxicity and cell viability of human cancer cell HT-29 (Colon Carcinoma cell lines) and antibacterial studies against various bacterial strains were studied with various concentrations of nickel oxide nanoparticles prepared from Moringa oleifera plant extract. MTT assay measurements on cell viability and morphological studies proved that the synthesized NiO nanoparticles posses cytotoxic activity against human cancer cells and the various zones of inhibition (mm), obtained revealed the effective antibacterial activity of NiO nanoparticles against various Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial pathogens. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Green synthesis of NiO nanoparticles using Moringa oleifera extract and their biomedical applications: Cytotoxicity effect of nanoparticles against HT-29 cancer cells

A simple low-temperature co-precipitation method was employed to synthesize pure and Ba-doped self-assembled ZnO nanospheres. The presence of self-assembled nanosphere-like morphology, high crystallinity, uniform size distribution, and more defects were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Photocatalytic degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, a potent endocrine-disrupting chemical in aqueous medium was investigated. The effects of Ba doping on the structure, morphology, absorption, emission, and photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanospheres were investigated systematically. Furthermore, the effects of different photocatalytic degradation reaction parameters were investigated. The resulting photocatalytic degradation activity of Ba-doped ZnO nanospheres shows superior efficiency compared to pure ZnO and commercial TiO2 (Degussa P-25). © 2015 Springer-Verlag.
