We propose a hexagonal photonic crystal fiber structure with elliptical and circular air-holes in cladding. Birefringence of the order of 10-4 is achieved with flattened and near-zero dispersion, over a wide wavelength range, varying from 0.85μm to 1.95μm. Low confinement loss less than the order of 0.1 dB/km is achieved. In this paper, we propose two different cases of PCFs with same structure, by filling with two different materials in the middle horizontal layer of air-holes. We have achieved the rare property of having required birefringence, dispersion as well as confinement loss, for present day applications. This finds application as polarization control in fiber optic sensors and in optical communication systems. © 2014 IEEE.
