High Voltage Gain Switched Capacitor Boost Converter with ANFIS Controller for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Applications

AbstractHigh switching frequency and high voltage gain DC-DC boost converters are required for electric vehicles. In this paper, a new high step-up boost converter (HSBC) is designed for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) applications. The designed converter provides the better high voltage gain compared to conventional boost converter and also reduces the input current ripples and voltage stress on power semiconductor switches. In addition to this, a neural network based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller is designed for the 1.26 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Radial basis function network (RBFN) algorithm is used in the neural network controller to extract the maximum power from PEMFC at different temperature conditions. The performance analysis of the designed MPPT controller is analyzed and compared with a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) in MATLAB/Simulink environment.

High Step-Up Boost Converter with Neural Network Based MPPT Controller for a PEMFC Power Source Used in Vehicular Applications

With the drastic inclination towards reduction of atmospheric issues, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/hybrid-electric-vehicle">hybrid electric vehicles</a> are becoming the major alternative for <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/internal-combustion-engine">internal combustion engine</a> vehicles. Compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles are remarkable in terms of efficiency, durability and acceleration capability. However, the major drawback of hybrid electric vehicle is energy storage capability. An electric vehicle requires the energy sources with high specific power (W/kg) and high specific energy (Wh/kg) to reduce the charging time. Generally, fuel cells, batteries, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/supercapacitors">ultracapacitors</a>, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/flywheels">flywheels</a> and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/regenerative-braking">regenerative braking</a> systems are used in hybrid electric vehicles as energy sources and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/energy-storage-device">energy storage devices</a>. All these energy storage devices are connected to the different DC-DC converter topologies to increase the input <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/source-voltage">source voltage</a>. From the recent past, most of the hybrid electric vehicles are using multi-input converters to connect more than one energy source in order to improve the efficiency and reliability of the vehicle. This survey presents an assessment of present and future trend of energy storage devices and different multi-input DC-DC converter topologies that are being used in hybrid electric vehicles. In addition, different electric vehicle architectures are also discussed.

Energy sources and multi-input DC-DC converters used in hybrid electric vehicle applications – A review

A new RBFN based MPPT controller for grid-connected PEMFC system with high step-up three-phase IBC

This paper proposes a multi-input single output (MISO) super lift negative output Luo converter for DC grid connected hybrid wind and photo voltaic (PV) system. The proposed converter is developed by sharing the charging capacitor and DC link capacitor between the two super lift negative output Luo converters to form a hybrid system. Therefore, it has the advantage of the simple structure and reduced converter passive components. The proposed converter is designed and then analyzed for the DC grid connected hybrid wind and PV system. This study considers a 500W wind system and a 560W PV system with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms of perturb&amp; observe (P&amp;O) method for both wind and PV system. The proposed converter effectiveness has been validated and compared with the proportional integral (PI) and P&amp;O control algorithms by using the simulation results. Based on the availability of the wind and PV energy sources, the converter usage is presented. © 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Analysis of MISO Super Lift Negative Output Luo Converter with MPPT for DC Grid Connected Hybrid PV/Wind System

Due to the more vigorous regulations on carbon gas emissions and fuel economy, Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) are becoming more popular in the automobile industry. This paper presents a neural network-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller for 1.26-kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), supplying electric vehicle powertrain through a high voltage-gain dc-dc boost converter. The proposed neural network MPPT controller uses a radial basis function network (RBFN) algorithm for tracking the maximum power point of the PEMFC. High switching-frequency and high voltage-gain dc-dc converters are essential for the propulsion of FCEV. In order to attain high voltage-gain, a three-phase high voltage-gain interleaved boost converter is also designed for FCEV system. The interleaving technique reduces the input current ripple and voltage stress on the power semiconductor devices. The performance analysis of the FCEV system with RBFN-based MPPT controller is compared with the fuzzy logic controller in MATLAB/Simulink platform.
