A number of genes controlling the initiation of meiosis are now known in a few organisms including the ameiotic gene in maize. Work on the action of these genes is briefly reviewed. It is suggested that the manipulations for inducing meiosis in mutant plants and for phenocopying the ameiotic mutant would be useful complement to the genetic/analytical techniques.
