Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures

Recently published research indicates that natural fibre based polymer composites have limited applications in advanced structural systems due to their low impact performance. However, natural fibres have great potential for reducing the product weight, lowering material cost, and renewability. Hybrid composites made from a combination of natural/synthetic fibres, natural/natural fibres, or synthetic/synthetic fibres are also receiving attention from both researchers and the industry for structural applications owing to the tailored mechanical and impact properties of these materials. The hybridisation process is one of the paramount and more efficient ways to strengthen and improve the performance of composite materials. This review paper examines the impact properties of hybrid composites manufactured with the aim of improving their structural characteristics, and in particular, is focused on the impact resistance and penetration behaviour of hybrid composites reinforced with natural and synthetic fibres as well as their suitability for modern structural applications. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Experimental Study on Fatigue–Vibration Interactions of Cyclically Loaded FRP Composite Cantilever Beams Made of Glass/Carbon-Layered Arrangements

The disposal of used automobiles tyres is a major environmental concern of the day. Annually, there are 1.2 billion tyres seeking disposal issues globally. Concrete as a major construction material can potentially adopt processed rubber waste—derived from tyres as a partial replacement for aggregates. The present study is focused on mechanical and thermal properties of concretes with rubber as partial replacement to well-graded conventional aggregates. The study includes replacement of 10, 20, 30 and 100% of coarse aggregate with waste tyre aggregates and was compared with conventional M30 grade concrete. Concretes were subjected a thermal cyclic heating of 50 °C for a period of 7 days. The results showed that the weight of the rubber concrete is reduced by 12% compared to the conventional concrete and the strength of the concrete reduces with the increase in rubber content. At ambient temperatures, the rubber concrete was found thermally stable. The compressive strengths were found increasing after cyclic heating of 50 °C for a period of 7 days. This effect may be due the effect of Portland pozzolana cement which has 30% of fly ash in it. From this study, it can be concluded that rubber waste concretes can be a potential candidate for structural and non-load bearing structures at ambient temperatures. © 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

On Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Concretes with Rubber as Partial Replacement to Well-Graded Conventional Aggregates

Experimental studies are presented on in-plane mechanical properties for two types of hybrid composites made using 8H satin weave T300 carbon fabrics and plain weave E-glass fabrics with epoxy resin. Results are also presented for 8H satin weave T300 carbon/epoxy and plain weave E-glass/epoxy. Studies are carried out under both tensile and compressive in-plane quasi-static loading. It is observed that for hybrid composites, placing glass fabric layers in the exterior and carbon fabric layers in the interior gives higher tensile strength and ultimate tensile strain than placing carbon fabric layers in the exterior and glass fabric layers in the interior. Quantitative data is given for different mechanical properties. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
