Labview Based Optimum Overcurrent Relay Coordination in Distribution Network

Abstract
Microgrids are energy system which consists of distributed energy sources and loads which can operate in parallel or independently from the main grid. Conventional protection strategies are not applicable to microgrids and is hence challenging for protection engineers to clear a fault. The overcurrent relays (OCR) are significantly used as protection devices in the distribution system. These relays also provide backup protection as and when required. The OCR coordination is a highly constrained optimization problem. This paper presents Dual-Simplex algorithm for attaining coordination of OCRs in distribution network or microgrid with radial verticals. The algorithm focusses to find an optimum relay setting to minimize the time of operation of relays and aids in eradicating the fault quickly. A Lab-view based central protection centre with OCR capability is realized and tested. © 2018 IEEE.
