Dissimilar combinations of Monel 400 and austenitic stainless steel AISI 316 is widely used in the petrochemical, nuclear industries where the weldments are usually subjected to hot corrosion. This paper deals with the assessment of metallurgical and mechanical properties of these bimetallic joints obtained by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process using ERNiCrMo-3 filler metal. A detailed structure- property relationship was made on these bimetallic joints using the combined techniques of optical microscopy, SEM/EDAX analysis.

Structural relationships of metallurgical and mechanical properties influenced by Ni-based fillers on Gas Tungsten Arc Welded Ferritic /Austenitic SS dissimilar joints

Hot corrosion of weldments is a major problem in various industrial applications such as gas turbines, diesel engines and furnaces etc. The work carried out consists ofsimilar weldments of 8 mm thick 316L made by activated TIG welded samples when exposed to high temperature molten salts of V2O5 + 60%wt NaCl at 650°C under cyclic conditions. The kinetics of corrosion of weldment was determined from the weight change of the samples calculated during the experiments.After the process of hot corrosion the material properties of the products were characterized by SEM/EDAX and XRD techniques. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.

Studies on hot corrosion behaviour of A-TIG welded AISI 316 weldments

Dissimilar metal welding involving AISI 304 and Monel 400 finds widespread use in marine and offshore environments for the fabrication of heat exchangers, evaporators, piping and vessels in petrochemical and power generation industries. However studies on the performance of such weldments are scantly found in the literature even though the individual metals have higher corrosion resistance and strength. This paper reports the work carried out on welding of AISI 304 and Monel 400 using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) technique to examine the weldability, mechanical and metallurgical properties. Investigations have been carried out on the hot corrosion behavior of these joints subjected to cyclic air oxidation and K2SO4&nbsp;+&nbsp;NaCl (60%) molten salt environment at 600&nbsp;°C. A comparative analysis was carried out on these weldments for two different filler metals such as E309L and ENiCu-7. The oxide scales formed on the various zones of the weldment have been characterized systematically using surface analytical techniques. Weld zone was found to be more susceptible to degradation than base metals used. The effect of filler materials on the hot corrosion is discussed. The studies reported in this paper would be beneficial for fabricators embracing this type of dissimilar weldments in the petrochemical and power generation industries.

Effect of filler materials on the performance of gas tungsten arc welded AISI 304 and Monel 400

This paper presents the investigations carried out to study the microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI 304 stainless steel and AISI 4140 low alloy steel joints by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Electron Beam Welding (EBW) and Friction Welding (FRW). For each of the weldments, detailed analysis was conducted on the phase composition, microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties. The results of the analysis shows that the joint made by EBW has the highest tensile strength (681. MPa) than the joint made by GTAW (635. Mpa) and FRW (494. Mpa). From the fractographs, it could be observed that the ductility of the EBW and GTA weldment were higher with an elongation of 32% and 25% respectively when compared with friction weldment (19%). Moreover, the impact strength of weldment made by GTAW is higher compared to EBW and FRW. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

A methodology to model the weld between the constituent bodies of a bimetallic configuration is presented for estimating the effect of strength gradient across the weld interface on crack growth characteristics under fatigue load. The constituent bodies and the interface weld have similar elastic and thermal expansion properties but different plastic properties. A Mode I crack is in parent soft alloy steel (ASTM 4340) which grows perpendicularly towards the ultra strong weld of maraging steel (MDN 250). A cyclic plastic or cohesive zone develops ahead of the crack tip under fatigue load. This zone penetrates into the weld, possibly crossing over into maraging steel, as the crack grows nearer to the weld which causes the drop in stress intensity parameter at the crack tip from the applied value. The cohesive zone split across the weld interface is modeled in linear elastic regime with the help of Kolosov-Muskhelishvili complex potentials leading to a computational model for assessing the effect of the weld on the advancing crack. Paris law based on cyclic crack tip stress intensity parameter is used to estimate the crack growth rate. Theoretical assessment is substantiated with the help of experiments. Bimetallic compact tension specimens, prepared by electron beam welding of the steels, are subjected to high cycle fatigue load to measure crack growth rates in them. Results of the bimetallic specimens are analyzed and compared with those of the plain alloy steel specimen. Influence of ultra high strength weld substantially reduces the growth rate of the approaching crack resulting in enhanced fatigue life of the bimetallic body. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical estimations. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
