Modified polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane for the treatment of tannery wastewater

Poly(ether sulfone) blended membranes were synthesized with various percentages of manganese carbonate as a surface modifier and poly(ethylene glycol) using a phase inversion technique. Surface characterization was made using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and contact angle. The membrane equilibrium water content, porosity and average pore size were measured to evaluate the physical properties of the membrane. Performance of the blended membranes was evaluated in terms of water permeability, antifouling property and dye rejection efficiency. The membrane showed a significant change in surface morphology and hydrophilicity when 3 wt % MnCO3 was used. Water uptake tests confirmed the enhanced porous nature of the PES/PEG/MnCO3 blended membranes over the pristine PES membrane. Fouling studies showed that the 3 wt% MnCO3 blended membrane possesses an impressive 98% flux recovery ratio. © 2017, © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor &amp; Francis Group.

Improved hydrophilic property of PES/PEG/MnCO3 blended membranes for synthetic dye separation

A series of Polyethersulfone (PES)-barium chloride (BaCl2) blend ultra filtration membrane was developed by varying the BaCl2 concentration in the dope solution. Prepared membranes were subjected to membrane characterization and their performance was studied through dye rejection tests. Morphological studies through SEM and AFM showed that the composite membranes exhibited differences in morphologies, porosities and properties due to the BaCl2 addition as compared with pristine PES membrane. Addition of the inorganic modifier enhanced the hydrophilicity and water permeability of the blend membrane system. Polymer enhanced ultrafiltration of dye solutions showed that the proposed blend system had better performance in terms of flux and rejection efficiency than the pure polymer membrane. The performance of the 2 wt% BaCl2 blend membrane was more promising for application to real time dye wastewater studies. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Polyethersulfone – barium chloride blend ultrafiltration membranes for dye removal studies

AbstractUltrafiltration (UF) is one of the most widely used membrane technologies for the effective separation of macromolecules in feed solutions. However, despite good separation efficiency, the UF membranes made up of pure polymers suffer to a greater extent because of low flux problem, which affects the process time and load. To handle this limitation, the base polymer is blended with a suitable additive to modify the structural and surface morphology of the membrane to provide better fluxes. In this current study, a series of polyethersulfone (PES) UF asymmetric membranes blended with polyethylene glycol and iron oxide nanoparticles was prepared using the phase inversion technique. Prepared membranes were analyzed for their morphology, thermal stability, and membrane characterization. Morphology studies using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirmed the increase in the number of pores, pore size in support layer, and surface roughness in the blended membranes, ensuring the chances of enhanced flux. Surface hydrophilicity was increased with the increase in the iron oxide concentration in the composite membranes. Thermal analysis studies showed the better thermal stability of the blended membranes. Pure water flux of the prepared composite membranes was improved to a maximum of four times in comparison with pure PES membrane. Dye rejection studies clearly showed that the blended membranes almost had the same rejection as that of pure PES membrane. Thus, the prepared PES composite UF membrane is a promising candidate for the treatment of dye-polluted wastewater, ensuring high fluxes and effective rejection.

Polyethylene glycol and iron oxide nanoparticles blended polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane for enhanced performance in dye removal studies

Abstract The aim of this work was to study the effect of two solvents such as N,N′-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc) used in the production of polysulfone (PSf) and polyurethane (PU) blend ultrafiltration membranes, influence permeability and selectivity. PSf/PU membranes were prepared by the phase inversion method using polymer concentrations of 100/0, 20/80 and 0/100 wt%. Permeation performance of the prepared membranes was evaluated in terms of pure water flux, water content and hydraulic resistance. It was found that the membrane composed of 20/80 wt% of PSf/PU in the presence of DMAc showed a water flux of 60.5 l m -2h-1 under transmembrane pressure of 345 kPa, and the water flux of 23.5 l m-2h-1 for 20/80 wt% of PSf/PU in the presence of DMF. With increasing the polarity of DMAc in the casting solution, an increase in porous layer thickness was observed, and then a good water flux of membranes can be obtained. It was found that the polar solvent caused the rapidly demixing of casting solution in coagulation bath and formed porous asymmetric membranes with defective skin layer. The permeation rates of proteins were measured with different molecular weights of the proteins.
