Abstract
Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites (Al-MMC) reinforced with ceramic particles was considered as a good replacement for cast iron in many automotive applications which requiring high wear resistance and light weight. In this work, a machinability study was carried out on aluminium matrix (Al 6061T6) reinforced with 10% and 3.5% by volume fraction of silicon carbide and graphite particles respectively. The experiments were carried out based on a taguchi's L9 orthogonal array. The cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut and nose radius were taken as controllable factors. Two performance measures such as surface roughness (Ra, Rt, and Rz) and resultant cutting force are considered. The optimum machining parameters were obtained by a novel technique called desirability function analysis combined with analysis of means (ANOM) for the multi-response optimization. Confirmation test was performed to validate the experimental results and also tool wear analysis is carried out using optical microscope. It is clearly shown that the multiple responses in the machining process are improved through this approach. © Research India Publications.
