Abstract
The following paper focuses on the operation of a multilevel inverter which is single phase with minimal quantity of switches. Existing multilevel inverter topologies [3, 4] employ more number of capacitors and diodes, and above all, more power switches and diodes. The paper provides a proposed solution to overcome this drawback by providing less number of switches and input sources. Thus proposed single phase multilevel inverter reduces the complexity in the design of the circuit. The principle of operation is analysed and the output of discrete voltage levels are obtained. And also the comparison with topologies already in existence, of single phase five-level inverters we find out that this topology with minimal quantity of switches has higher efficiency and is cost effective The main disadvantage is due to the limitation on switching frequency which causes switching losses in the system and also power dissipation takes place. To reduce harmonic distortion in the phase voltage waveform, the discrete number of levels in the output voltage is increased. © 2017, Institute of Advanced Scientific Research, Inc.
