Abstract
This paper numerically validates the inlet-isolator geometry of a dual mode scramjet model. An improvement in the performance of this model is proposed by creating concavities of different depths in ramp surface. Two models with the concavities of depth 0.1 and 0.15 inches are numerically simulated at Mach number 4.03. Present study shows that a concavity in ramp increases the static pressure as compared to the base case. Increase in static pressure at the exit of isolator is observed because of increased number of shocks along curvature of the ramp. Mach number is also plotted for all the cases and it is reported that there is an increase in mach number for both the concavity cases when compared to base case. Concavity in the ramp at a certain distance from leading edge, transformed the nature of flow from sub-critical to nearly critical which resulted into increase in mach mass flow rate as compared to the base case. Total pressure across the isolator exit section is also plotted and rise in total pressure is observed. Overall improvement in most of the parameters is observed for both the models with concavity which further assists in combustion process. © 2019, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA.
