Abstract

The present work is concerned with an experimental study of turning operation on EN 31 steel by a
Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) coated cutting tool. Cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut are
the cutting parameters considered in this study. Main cutting force and surface roughness are considered
as response variables. The objective of this study is to optimize the machining process parameters in
turning of EN31 steel with TiAlN coated cutting tool and find the percentage contribution made by each
process parameter. Taguchi method is employed to find optimum cutting parameters. ANOVA (Analysis
of variance) is used to find out the percentage contribution made by each process parameter on main cutting
force and surface roughness. From the signal to noise ratio (S/N ratio) analysis, the optimum machining
condition is: Spindle RPM 1170, feed rate 0.054 mm/rev and depth of cut 0.08 mm.
