Abstract
A series of zinc chloride blended polyethersulfone ultrafildddtration (UF) membranes was prepared using phase inversion method in the blend compositions of 0/100, 2/98, 4/96, 6/94, 8/92 and 10/90 % respectively. Prepared membranes were subjected to morphological and UF characterization studies. Morphological studies using SEM and AFM revealed the increased pore size and surface roughness in the blend membranes due to zinc chloride addition, thereby indicating the chances of enhanced fluxes for blend membranes than the pure polymer membrane. UF characterization studies on the prepared membranes clearly indicated the improved hydrophilicity, water uptake and pure water flux with increase in the zinc chloride concentration in the membranes. Inorganic salt rejection studies conducted on these blend membranes showed that rejection percentage was slightly reduced with increase in the zinc chloride composition in the blend membranes. All the obtained results clearly indicated that the zinc chloride blended polyethersulfone UF membranes are promising candidates for potential applications which require higher permeate fluxes with an agreeable solute rejection percentage.
