Abstract
In this work extraction of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) from waste vegetable oil was studied. Pretreatment of oil was carried out with different acids (such as hydrochloric acid, oleic acid and phosphoric acid etc.) to remove the impurities present in the wastevegetable oil. Phosphoric acid at 3% concentration was found to be the suitable agent for the removal of impurities. Two step trans-esterification processes was proposed. Different molar ratios of methanol to oil ranging from 1:3, 1:6, 1:9 was studied, 1:6 was found to be optimum. Various catalysts such as heterogeneous, homogenous were experimented, NaOH wt% was found to be the suitable catalyst. The optimum temperature was found to be 55ºC.Kinematic viscosity of the FAME was 6.314 mm2/s. The maximum yield was 78%. © Research India Publications.
