Abstract
Nature's astonishing cleansing capacity is amply demonstrated by the presence of forest canopies in polluted urban areas. Although individually one can sense the cleansing action, it is important that the rate of cleansing by green façades is quantified. Inthis study we present new results from our ongoing works on greenfacades at VIT University, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India, using passiflora creepers. We have facades draped with this creeper on a metallic frame which is portable and can be oriented in any suitable direction. We have two such arrangements, one for baseline case andanother for experimental analyses corresponding to varying levels of polluted atmospheres. IC engine exhausts from the Automotive Research Laboratory in VIT University is directly exposed for varying durations on to the experimental façade. The chemical analyses involving liquid extraction methods clubbed with spectrophotometry quantifies the concentration of sulphates and nitrates embedded in the plant tissues and stoma. SEM images contrast the absorption patterns of the exposed vis-à-vis the controlled façade under no-load and full-load conditions.
