This paper presents the design of Solar PV based LED lighting system suitable for a class room. The model of class room is created using DIALux 4.11and LED lighting system is provided inside the room for illumination. The design calculations of the lighting are done as per the IESNA (Illumination Engineering Society of North America) standards. Based on the lighting load requirement, the number of solar panels and batteries required to generate and store the power is determined. To assess the performance of the lighting system, simulation is done and the photometric parameters are calculated from the observed values. In addition to the photometric parameters, the annual lighting energy required for illuminating the room is also estimated. The computed result has proved that the LED lighting system is suitable for residential indoor applications providing good visual clarity and comfort. © 2014 Kavala Institute of Technology.
