The optimal process parameters of CO2 <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/materials-science/laser-beam-welding">laser welding</a> were arrived out at performing iterative experimentation with different speeds for Ni-based super alloy <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/inconel">Inconel</a> 718 and re-sulphurized <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/martensitic-grade">martensitic grade</a> stainless steel, AISI 416. Microscopy investigations corroborated the micro-segregation of Laves phase augmented in Nb at the fusion zone of CO2 laser welds and also trivial liquation cracks or micro fissuring at the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/heat-affected-zone">heat affected zone</a> (HAZ) of Inconel 718 were observed. The fusion zone microstructure attested the absence of solidification cracks and/or porosity. Tensile failures were observed on the weaker parent metal of AISI 416, despite some minor microstructural deficits in the fusion zone. The current work attests that dissimilar joints of Inconel 718 and AISI 416 could be obtained in a single pass using keyhole mode CO2 laser welding process.

Microstructure and properties of inconel 718 and AISI 416 laser welded joints

The present study addresses the effect of fillers on the microstructure and tensile strength of dissimilar joints of Inconel 625 and UNS S32205 by pulsed current gas tungsten arc welding (PCGTAW) employing ERNiCrMo-10 and ERNiCrMo-14 fillers. This study attested that tensile failure occurred in the fusion zone of the dissimilar joints for both the cases in the as-welded un-peened condition. Double shot laser shock peening (DLSP) was performed on the fusion zone of these PCGTA welds on the cap and root regions of the weldments. It was assimilated that after DLSP on the cap and root regions of the weldments, the yield and tensile strength of the welded joints employing these fillers were improved considerably. Residual stress analysis were carried out on the dissimilar coupons using X-ray Diffraction analysis. The results demonstrated that after subjecting to double sided DLSP, the fusion zones were subjected to compressive residual stresses. The present study articulated that shot peening using low energy laser beam resulted in better tensile strength. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Influence of laser peening on the tensile strength and impact toughness of dissimilar welds of Inconel 625 and UNS S32205

The dissimilar combinations of Inconel 625 and duplex stainless steel SAF 2205 obtained from manual GTA welding process employing ER2209 and ERNiCrMo-3 filler metals have been investigated. Formation of secondary phases at the HAZ of Inconel 625 and grain coarsening at the HAZ of SAF 2205 were witnessed while using these filler wires. The average hardness of ER2209 weldments was found to be greater than ERNiCrMo-3 weld. Tensile fracture was observed at the weld zones for both the fillers. Impact test trials showed brittle mode of fracture on employing ER2209 filler and mixed (ductile-brittle) mode of fracture while using ERNiCrMo-3 filler. Further optical microscopy and SEM/EDS analysis were carried out across the weldments to investigate the structure-property relationships. © The Chinese Society for Metals and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.
