Abstract

Natural fibre reinforced polymer composites became more attractive structural materials due to their high specific strength, lightweight and biodegradability properties. There has been a growing interest to utilize the natural fibres as reinforcement in polymer composites for making low cost construction materials but the application of the material technology for the utilization of natural fibres as reinforcement in polymer matrix took place in comparatively recent years. The present work investigates the mechanical behaviour of epoxy based natural composites, made by using bidirectional sisal fabric through a combination of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and experimental methods. The sisal fabric is used in layers with epoxy as the matrix material for the fabrication of the composite laminates by hand lay-up technique. First, the mechanical properties like tensile strength; is predicted using FEA software, Ansys. The experimental validation of the composite laminated test coupons was tested by using Universal Testing Machine (Instron). The FEA and experimental results showed good agreement.
