New hydrazine derivatives were synthesized via reaction between 1, 3 cyclic diketones and hydrazinoisoquinoline derivatives. The reaction proceeded smoothly in ethanol under reflux temperature and furnished products in excellent yields (76-87%). The products have been purified and fully characterized by spectroscopy techniques. The compounds 8a-c showed good bacterial inhibition against Bacillus cerus and 8d-f showed good antifungal activity against Candida albicans.

The natural products or bioorganic phase from food sources as pure compounds provides many applications in the food industry and pharmaceutical industry. The fruits and vegetables are the main sources for many bioorganic phases such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids etc., The focus of this book chapter is on the extraction and preliminary detection of active ingredients in food sources. The common problems and key challenges in the extraction process of food sources is discussed. As extraction methods play an important role in isolation of bioorganic phase, the different extraction process for each bioorganic phase is discussed.

Present and future health care systems are more demanding on the discovery and usage of novel drugs, which should have a potent target system with the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Available drugs used currently are chemically synthesized and some of them are yet to be studied for their toxicity assessment. Bioorganic phase can be an indispensable field on isolating and identifying the metabolites from the food sources has become trend in recent days. Indian food systems are embedded with the Indian system of medicine. Indian food plants and Indian spices are highly enriched with the medicinal properties. Their applications are vital in industrial and pharmaceuticals. Hence, isolation of the novel compounds is one of the goal in bioorganic phase by various methods, it may be either traditional (decoction, maceration and solvent extraction) or by recent (ultra-sonication, microwave assisted and enzymatic extraction) methods. Identification and characterization of compounds can be done through chromatographic techniques and spectroscopic methods. This chapter deliberates with phyto-constituents from the common food plant products such as vegetables, spices and condiments. Their important phyto-compounds having pharmacological actions and how they were isolated, identified and characterized using different methods were discussed. Isolation and Characterization of Bioorganic Phase from Food Source

The practice of treating various disease using medicinal plants are as older as an ancient civilization. Secondary metabolites present in the plants are predominantly responsible for treating various ailments. Secondary metabolites are also called as plant constituents or natural compounds which exert significant pharmacological and toxicological effects in humankind. The chemical compounds present in the plant sources are categorized as primary and secondary metabolites based on the chemical structure and biosynthetic derivation. Secondary metabolites exhibit different series of pharmacological activity which can be further classified based on their chemical structure and functional groups present in it. The most important secondary metabolites include terpenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids and glycosides which act as an important source for single bioactive ingredients in nutraceuticals and modern medicines. Secondary metabolites have a very good antioxidant property which can be used as an effective natural antioxidants source in nutraceuticals. Most of the secondary metabolites have a broad range of their therapeutic activity and they directly interact with the receptors, cell membranes, and nucleic acids. This review evaluates the meticulous report of secondary metabolites, their classification, phytochemistry, pharmacological activity and its application in modern medicines which may pave the way for knowledge to identify and isolate the desired pharmacologically active lead compound in the drug discovery. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Phytochemical and Pharmacological Importance of Plant Secondary Metabolites in Modern Medicine

A facile phyto chemical extracellular synthesis of Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) with the help of starting material Palladium acetate and easily available wild plant Catunaregum spinosa (C. Spinosa) were developed. The phyto chemicals present in the plant acts as secondary metabolites for Pd NPs formation. In most of the industries carcinogenic dyes are released into water bodies in an uncontrolled manner among this Congo red is also released; which said to be a toxic diazo dye. These effluents can play a prominent role in affecting the flora and fauna. In this perspective Pd NPs is synthesized by using C. spinosa root bark aqueous extract in an ecofriendly manner by using bottom-up approach. Further the Pd NPs was monitored by UV–Vis spec and characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TEM, EDAX, Zeta potential. Green synthesized Pd nanomaterials identified as agglomerated spherical shape particles and size average of 47 ± 2 nm by microscopical analysis. Further the synthesized Pd NPs were investigated against the homogenous catalytic degradation Congo red results in 83%. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Environmental Friendly Synthesis of Palladium Nanoparticles and its Photocatalytic Activity Against Diazo Dye to Sustain the Natural Source

Ecofriendly synthesis of Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) were achieved using Phyllanthus emblica (P. emblica) seeds as reducing agent. Further the ecofriendly synthesized PdNPs were subjected for various analytical techniques like UV–Vis, FT-IR, XRD, Zeta potential, SEM and TEM. The results indicated that green synthesized PdNPs were spherical in shape with average particle size of 28 ± 2 nm with moderate stability. Further the synthesized PdNPs and extract were subjected for its antibacterial studies against various disease causing pathogens by agar well diffusion method. Seed extract resulted in 8.9 ± 1.46 mm against B. subtilis and PdNPs showed 9.6 ± 1.10 mm against S. aureus and synthesized PdNPs and extract were tested for hemolytic which resulted in 20% and 10% respectively. Toxicity studies were done against Artemia salina (A. salina). The LC50 value of green synthesized P. emblica capped PdNPs and the P. emblica seed extract were found to be less toxic for A. salina with a value of 1.00 μg/mL and 1.25 μg/mL. In addition samples were checked for in vitro cytotoxicity assays on HeLa cell lines. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Phyllanthus emblica seed extract mediated synthesis of PdNPs against antibacterial, heamolytic and cytotoxic studies

A series of 3-substituted-1H-isochromene-1-thiones (3) were prepared by the reaction of 3-substituted isocoumarins (2) with Lawesson's reagent in the presence of toluene under a nitrogen atmosphere. The antimicrobial activities of the newly synthesized products were measured using Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Proteus mirabilis) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus). Synthesized thioanalogue of isocoumarins showed good antibacterial activity against Proteus mirabilis. © Taylor &amp; Francis Group, LLC.

Isocoumarin Thioanalogues as Potential Antibacterial Agents

Platinum nanoparticles have been supported on V2O5-C composite through the reduction of chloroplatinic acid with formaldehyde. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Catalytic activity and stability for the oxidation of methanol were studied by using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Pt/V2O5-C composite anode catalyst on glassy carbon electrode show higher electro-catalytic activity for the oxidation of methanol. High electro-catalytic activities and good stabilities could be attributed to the synergistic effect between Pt and V2O5, avoiding the electrodes being poisoned. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Electrochemical oxidation of methanol on Pt/V2O5–C composite catalysts

Five derivatives of thioisocoumarin bearing aromatic and nonaromatic ring systems have been synthesized and characterized to unravel the importance of interactions due to the presence of a sulfur atom in generating packing motifs in the crystalline state. Apart from the well characterized interactions like C-H⋯S, a CS⋯π interaction is found in one of the case studies. The importance of such interactions in crystal structure packing along with routine C-H⋯π and π⋯π interactions is examined in the context of overall stability in the molecular assembly. The CS⋯π interactions in comparison to CO⋯π interactions have been analyzed using the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). © 2009 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Evaluation of intermolecular interactions in thioisocoumarin derivatives: the role of the sulfur atom in generating packing motifs

The complete molecule of the title compound, C30H20N2Se2, is generated by a crystallographic inversion centre at the mid-point of the Se - Se bond. The dihedral angle between the isoquinoline-1-selenol group and the phenyl ring is 14.92 (2)°. The herringbone-like packing of the structure is supported by inter-molecular π-π stacking inter-actions with a shortest perpendicular distance between isoquinoline groups of 3.514 Å; the slippage between these ring systems is 0.972 Å, and the distance between the centroids of the six-membered carbon rings is 3.645 (3) Å. © 2008.
