A series of 3-substituted isocoumarins were prepared by the reaction of homophthalic acid with different enol derivatives like phenol, catechol, resorcinol, 1-naphthol, 2-naphthol and oxine in the presence of montmorillonite K-10 or polyphosphoric acid.
