Abstract

The challenges faced by the English language teachers in imparting language skills to the Engineering students are extensive as the learners give priority to their specialized subjects by sidelining English. A lack of focus on language proficiency, in particular grammar, vocabulary and sentence constructions, leads an adverse result in placement interviews and there after. An innovative and effective method that can grab language learners’ attention and interest is to adapt to the new vistas of digital learning approaches and in particular learning through social networking sites (SNSs). In fact, learners who feel socially connected to their peer groups and faculty report higher levels of learning than those who report less connected. Students, as the major users of SNSs, build up their virtual identities, increase their engagements and form their social relationship on these existing Social Networking Sites such as Facebook (Tian, Vogel, & Chi-Wai Kwok, 2010). Real time integration of technology into curriculum provides a Web-based platform and absorbs the learners the occupants of Digital Era. Many researches have shown that SNSs can increase the students’ learning motivation by communicating and collaborating with content experts, teachers and fellow learners around the globe. This conceptual paper aims at exploring how effectively the high penetration rate of SNSs among adolescents can be productively benefitted for enhancing English language learning and also drawing attention to the language learning performance of learners through SNSs. © Research India Publications.
