Nanoporous carbons (NPC) were prepared from crust leather wastes at temperatures 600, 700, 800 and 900 °C are labelled as CLC6, CLC7, CLC8 and CLC9 respectively. DC electrical conductivities of these NPCs were determined by two-probe method. The effects of compression pressure on electrical conductivity were studied by varying the compression pressure ranging from 17 to 611 KPa. An increase in values of electrical conductivity (EC) was noted for all samples with increase in compression pressures. CLC9 showed relatively higher conductivity values compared to the samples prepared at temperatures. At a compression pressure of 611 KPa, the EC values for CLC6, CLC7, CLC8 and CLC9 were 4.82×10-2, 4.26×10-1, 1.32, 3.7 Ω-1m-1 respectively. The temperature dependent conductivities of NPCs such as CLC6, CLC7, CLC8 and CLC9 revealed that the energy band gap (Eg) values to be 0.455, 0.253, 0.175, 0.145 eV respectively. This Eg values indicate that the NPCs fall under the category of low band gap semiconducting materials. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms show mixed type with Type I at low relative pressure range (P/Po) and Type IV at high P/Po range indicating that NPCs consists of both micropores (pore diameter, d &lt;2 nm) and mesopores (2 &lt; d &lt;50 nm) according to IUPAC classification. CLC8 possessed a maximum surface area of 716 m2/g estimated by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. Evolution of graphitic peaks was confirmed using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques to support the electrical conduction mechanisms in NPCs. Electrical Conductivity Studies of Nanoporous Carbon Derived from Leather Waste: Effect of Pressure, Temperature and Porosity

Nickel oxide nanoparticles supported activated carbon (NSAC) photocatalyst was successfully prepared using a cost-effective microwave irradiation method. The earned UV light-sensitive NSAC composites were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, High-resolution scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area analyzer. Optical properties of NSAC composites were investigated using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy, which exposed prolonged light absorption in UV light region and hold better charge separation capability, respectively, as compared to pure NiO. The photocatalytic activity was tested by the degradation of textile dye waste water (TDW) under UV light irradiation. Chemical oxygen demand of TDW was calibrated before and after the photocatalysis experiment under UV light to evaluate the mineralization of wastewater. The results demonstrated that NSAC composites showed imposing photocatalytic enrichment over pure NiO. The coordinated blending of the oxygen vacant sites, structural defects of NiO along with electron transmission capacity, and presence of surface oxygen on AC has led to the lasting light absorption, delayed charge recombination, and sustenance, which favor the enrichment of the photocatalytic activity of NSAC. © 2014 Balaban Desalination Publications. Synergy effect in the photocatalytic degradation of textile dyeing waste water by using microwave combustion synthesized nickel oxide supported activated carbon

The novel zirconium oxide, nickel oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles supported activated carbons (Zr-AC, Ni-AC, Zn-AC) were successfully fabricated through microwave irradiation method. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using XRD, HR-SEM, XPS and BET. The optical properties of Zr-AC, Ni-AC and Zn-AC composites were investigated using UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic efficiency was verified in the degradation of textile dyeing wastewater (TDW) in UV light irradiation. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) of TDW was observed at regular intervals to calculate the removal rate of COD. Zn-AC composites showed impressive photocatalytic enrichment, which can be ascribed to the enhanced absorbance in the UV light region, the effective adsorptive capacity to dye molecules, the assisted charge transfer and the inhibited recombination of electron-hole pairs. The maximum TDW degradation (82% COD removal) was achieved with Zn-AC. A possible synergy mechanism on the surface of Zn-AC was also designed. Zn-AC could be reused five times without exceptional loss of its activity. © 2015 The Nonferrous Metals Society of China.
